Two surprising things about Mitchell -

1) he's third in the list of Premier League left backs for amount of crosses in open play

2) he's supposedly one of three left backs being considered by Barcelona for a summer transfer

On 1) I'm amazed by this because I associate a stream of crosses from the likes of Robertson, but not Mitchell.
I can only assume the majority are blocked or don't hit their target.

On 2) I wonder if Mitchell may be out of contract in the summer.
If so, I would expect there to be interest in him from top clubs who can afford to keep big squads and are attracted by picking him up on a free.

While I'm not his biggest fan, and have doubts about his suitability for Glasner's system, I have no doubt about his ability as a defensive left back.
Not many wingers get the better of him and he's a good one on one defender.

His stats are right up there.
However, the main impressive thing about him is playing every game. The stamina to do that.
We're so lucky we have him - and we will miss him when he's gone.
It's been absolutely appalling that we've never had proper cover for him. Amateurish. Of all our players, what are we supposed to do if he goes? We've never shown the slightest inkling of thinking we need a left back.
Well some fans have but not the club.

And he deserves credit for being willing to try to play in a role in which he is obviously not that comfortable, although he's improving.
As an out and out defender he's a good player - if he had someone competent in front of him he'd be even better.

Not having what people perceive as cover for Mitchell is totally irrelevant to his ability. He is one of the most consistent players in the team, very fit and rarely gets injured. He will be sorely missed when he is gone and then people will realise how good he is.

Particularly if he leaves on a free which is mentioned in the Barcelona link.

I try and keep tabs on contract extensions at Palace. I have Mitchell down as having had his contract extended until Summer 2027. Not sure of my source for that but I wouldn't have changed it from 2025 without good reason. I note Transfermarkt still has it as 2025. I also note they have his valuation as 25m euros which given their usually conservative valuation of players is saying something.

He is so underrated!! No winger including Salah find him an easy opponent and he is up and down the pitch all game. He has suffered a bit now we haven’t got Anderson playing his Quarterback long passes out to him.

His crossing could improve but he has still put in some decent assists eg Mateta v Villa (3-1) and Eze at Anfield last season!

And that cross for Sarr at the Amex!!! Just WOW!!!! If De Bruyne had done that the media would still be banging on about it!!!!

If De Bruyne followed through in Wetherspoons they'd bang on about it.
OK, bad example - that might be newsworthy.

I agree painter, I think he’s really improved since our switch to 3 at the back and wing backs. I used to think he wasn’t as fit as he could be when he was blowing well late in games, but I think it’s because he puts a shift in every game and he’s not frightened to get stuck in physically as well

I wouldn’t say he’s my most improved player in 2024, but my perception of him as a player has massively improved this calender year

His previous manager was Roy Hodgson, a man who was never keen on fullbacks getting too far forward. And when he did support the attack and venture forward he had to comprehend what the extremely variable and often selfish Zaha was going to do next. Not ideal. Now he has a manager that wants to see him in forward positions and in a different tactical role. He's coping well I think.

Mitchell is a humble amiable chap who had a challenging upbringing.
My opinion of his worth to the team is more elevated and at variance with those who view him in a less positive light.
So in plain words you are not antipathetic towards an opinion antithetical to those who might view his adroitness as less than optimum.
