Matt Hobbs

It's very difficult to gauge our activity so far, but some of the names purchased over the past 3-4 years have been excellent and helped provide stability and transfer income to the club. My take on business so far.

LaCroix - 52M seems a reasonable price (good but looked average at WC). Agent must have stirred the pot as I can't believe the club would make his exit a priority.
Kamada - Retained with no transfer fee required. Good continuity and regular 1st team
Johnson - Preseason efforts seem to indicate he wants out. Might come good at Everton but keeping him at the club a risk to performances and morale.
McNeil - Should have a point to prove, left sided and excellent dead ball delivery. Still only 26 although it feels he's been around forever. Should be able to give Mitchell some rest (Sosa out)
Gozo - 10M and highly regarded as the top prospect in MLS. Pace, energy and youth. JRS or Esse out to balance the squad and budget.
Tomiyasu - Free and current Japanese international. Will probably play the European games to give a CB a rest.
Mingueza - Free, Barcelona academy and Spanish international. Has the pedigree to be a success.

Munoz - Absolutely flourished in the Glasner system but truth be told he was poor last year for both Palace and Colombia, especially after the injury he sustained and 30 years old.

Khalaili - 21 years old and touted by top CL teams. At 20M being quoted it looks a great buy and seemingly paves the way for a Munoz exit. Sad but maybe for the best (looked knackered at WC).

The past successes? What, when it was Dougie buying the players and Hobbs wasn't here?

Some quite poor takes on this. How did Br*ghton get £55m for a central defender in the last year of his contract and then a week later we get £52m for a player with 3 years left on his deal, who has just won 3 trophies, and made the WC for France?

You talk about Johnson and then completely miss out the part that he cost £35m and was a Hobbs signing. One of the worst signings in our history.

This is a thread about Hobbs so you have to also take into consideration the £50m spent on Strand Larsen. If, as you say, Lacroix had 'an average WC', what sort of WC did Strand Larsen have?

Does Sage even want any of these players? Hobbs is sh*te. Get rid of him now before more cr*p is signed.

Why do you, who has no knowledge of how the industry works, and also no knowledge on how good or bad Hobbs is find it so easy to just write him off.

Window feels pretty good so far

It's much easier for some to criticise with no knowledge of how the industry works. It's apparent that we are shopping in the free market or low fee players, which is much harder. This is due to European new rules on spending for their cup competitions, which doesn't apply to Premier teams not in Europe. A typical UEFA rule to penalise success.

Its not our money so the prices are irrelvant, as long as the owners balance the books. Uche and Johnson did not work out so they got rid. Mistakes happen (sakho, benteke, etc) Both still have potential ( like Sorloth) but not for us. McNiell they wanted, now they have. Guessand too pricey but still want. May come back on loan. That US player looks to be on his way too next week. So thats 5 probably in and still probably a new centre back coming. Normally we sign one player before August 31st so this summer is going well.

can somebody explain exactly what this bloke is doing?

We sell a £70 -£80 million pound defender to a rich club with years on his contract for a ridiculous £51million.
We then swap a really s*** purchase of £35 million for a £10 million pound player in his last year of contract at Everton.

Alarm bells are ringing
Same thing was said about freedman gets boring

Parish would have made the decision on both of those deals not Hobbs. I'm ambivalent re Hobbs but lets have it right. He doesn't approve deals. Only sets them up for Parish to agree/veto.
As far as the swap deal is concerned it seems that a lot of the massive loss we incurred on Johnson has now been transferred to Everton. Such was their desire to get him. Its looking more and more likely they have had their pants taken down in this deal.
And the Lacroix sale? I heard he pushed hard for the move even while he was still in the USA with France. With Chelsea digging their heels in on the fee and few other clubs showing an interest I doubt we had much choice but to let him go. £52m is less than he is worth but its decent money when we only paid £18m for him.

Johnson is a well known long term freedman target,

Johnson lost us a lot of money.....I like Larsen but 48 million? That's a hard sell.

52 million for our top defender with three years left on his contract?

Let's hope that the new guys coming in are good picks.
We don’t know the specifics of the Johnson/mcneil deal so can’t form an opinion of financially good or bad deal. Let’s see how McNeil gets in when he plays

I knew Johnson was sh*te before we spent £35m on him so I'd say I'm one up on him already.

What a strange comment, so no one can ever criticise a manager then? Or a player? Or an owner?

I judge a person who buys players on the players he buys. Not hard to understand. Maybe for you it is.

Wasn't Hobbs the one signing Wolves "replacements" after their big sales???
