They are apparently still keen on Freedman,which surely would be unwelcome and destabilising to our upcoming window.

From the article ;

It appears too late for any replacement to arrive before the winter transfer window opens this January, as those plans should already be in place at this stage. An incumbent sporting director leaving a role mid-season also seems unlikely, so it may be better for United to hold off on an appointment until the new year, who would start next season.

As I posted earlier, I heard they want to concentrate on analytics and data. That wouldn't be Freedman. However, he gets a big offer and he'll go.
I doubt he will go for the reasons Ashworth left, he wouldn't have control as he does now. Man Utd are a basket case of a club, since Ferguson retired.

United already have too many cooks and cannot afford more payouts unless they can shift players. They will go with the current management team

Ineos seem Hell bent on saving as much money as they can (right down to replacing a £100 Christmas bonus for all non playing staff with a £40 M&S voucher!)
Freedman recently signed a new contract meaning Parish can ask a lot of compensation. As the article points out, its too late to bring anyone in now with regard to the January window.

I'd imagine if they are keen on Freedman they'll contact Palace in the new year and get an idea of how much Parish would want. I'm not too sure its such a good fit if I'm honest but I'm not overly bothered if Freedman wants to go. As Parish has said many times, Freedman has an incredible team working under him. They are the ones that monitor and identify most of our targets these days. Freedman does an important job but as Newcastle (and United) found out with Ashworth, he's replaceable

Surely all Man Utd have to do is look closely at the scouting and recruitment process they used to buy Anthony and then just do the opposite. Should be a winner
