This is still ongoing. I just wanted to remind people so that this doesn't just go away.

Really interesting to read. Big money and corruption go hand in hand in my mind. If you've got enough of it the rules no longer matter. Makes your blood boil. Let's hope justice prevails but I won't hold my breath.

Rather a team like City spend their own money, than a team like United spend the bank’s money.
FFP was brought in to try and stop them (or any other club) from challenging the then-big four at the time Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea. City however managed to get just enough done before it came in that they were already on the trajectory they went on, and have been able to manage it.
The traditional big clubs didn’t like being challenged and they’ve gone after City ever since for it. Most of the “charges” are duplicates so it’s a lot less than the actual 115 that keeps getting thrown about, and they are all based on emails that Liverpool got their hands on after they hacked City’s servers, but the emails were taken out of context.
UEFA already put the charges to City and City proved them false at CAS. The Prem then put the same charges back to City and has drawn the case out ever since.
If there was anything in the “charges” they wouldn’t have dragged on for so long. The reason they do drag on is so there is never a real answer but we can always think something wrong happened. Even though they already proved to the CAS that everything was above board.
Since FFP came in it’s only affected the smaller clubs badly, which they are happy to keep doing as it protects the big teams at the top from having to be smart, and it just intrenches a big club at the top.
If you are one of the historic clubs, you don’t have to make good business and sporting decisions anymore because FFP keeps you in a decent position regardless.
That’s very lucky for some of them because they make very bad business and sporting decisions these days.
Likewise if you are not one of the historic clubs, it doesn’t really matter how smart you are, FFP will keep you from breaking through the glass ceiling.
The justification was always to stop another Portsmouth from happening. But Portsmouth were spending money they *didn’t have* (just like Man Utd have ever since the Glazers took over). That’s a lot different from spending money you *do have*.
Newcastle have the most in the bank and they should be able to spend it, but they can’t. So their progress has been limited and they’ve had to sell some players they should’ve kept. Even we have funds that we can’t spend because of FFP.
Having money doesn’t guarantee success, you can spend it badly and not progress, but if you aren’t allowed to spend at all how are you meant to ever challenge the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal who spend hundreds of millions year on year?

It’s never been about that. It was the big clubs that pushed for it, and mostly figures from United. They formed the majority of the staff at the FA at the time and they’ve always had the largest sway at the EPL.That's a very cynical way of viewing it.. I'd like to think that it was brought in to protect the smaller clubs from financial issues, but this has been the consequence/reality - making it harder for anyone to challenge those clubs with already big resources.

Thanks for that wonderful insight Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan 😉Rather a team like City spend their own money, than a team like United spend the bank’s money.
