Labour leadership challenge

"Former Labour minister Andrew Gwynne has announced he is standing down as an MP, paving the way for Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to potentially run in a by-election in his Gorton and Denton constituency.
In a statement, Gwynne said he had suffered "significant ill health" and had been advised by his GP that it wasn't safe for him to return to work as an MP.
Gwynne's resignation possibly opens up a path for Burnham to return to the House of Commons and make a leadership challenge against Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. (BBC website, so could be all fact-checked bollox, but has been reported elsewhere)

If, If. Burnham gets in, there'll be big changes. Not just as MP, but then making a leadership challenge. It won't come to fruition until the Summer, at least.

I wonder what Andrew Gwynne will get as a reward for standing aside. Knighthood, peerage or a cushy job ata Quango. Watch this space, he didn't step down for nothing.

I want to know how his doctor signed him off work forever, and the DWP aren't on his case. He looks fit for work to me, and that's normally enough to start an investigation by the DWP.
And I bet his pension is far in excess of the average national salary.
MPs are a single party, out to serve themselves

I hope he gets over his illness but most MPs prefer to keep their jobs even when they are no longer capable of performing them. The reason money of course. I can't say I blame them if your employer is willing to continue to pay you whilst you are sick then why not.

But I am cynical so you have to wonder why a dodgy MP suspended from the Labour party would give up his seat for nothing. Normally they cling to the doors of the Commons and have to be booted out.

So I am not convinced that he has done this for the benefit of the nation. There will be a payback somewhere along the line.

He negotiated his pension due to ill health, people have put two and two together and made a dark conspiracy out of it, Andy Burnham doesn't want to be Leader or Prime Minister,if he did he would have trouble passing the selection process nationally a tool of Starmers and he would then have to be selected by the local party followed by a by election win which is very unlikely indeed during mid term!

I wouldn't be so sure about that.

But I agree that Starmer and his allies will do everything they can to ensure he doesn't get the seat that is coming up for grabs.

You think that Labour will lose that seat then ? Quite a substantial majority to overturn...

So that was the payback then.

Many MPs have died in office after a long illness, many more have been convicted and refused to resign.

I am speculating but he doesn't appear to be a self sacrificing type.

Replacing one wanker with another.

Vote Reform.

I think he does. And as shameless a PR monkey as Boris.

...and people seek second opinions!

well,he has several hoops to jump through something as a monkey he may well negotiate. He needs the LPP the electorate and a Starmer to rubber stamp. Is hair will be grey or non-existent by the end of it.

The problem with the Labour party is that they now occupy the same ground as the Monster Raving Loony Party. Is it time for Screaming Lord Sutch to cross the floor and legitimise their rhetoric? I appreciate he's dead but if Angela Rayner can claim his tax free ISA allowance or his bus pass then I think he'll get sworn in rather easily.

Gwynne's illness appears to be a well kept secret.

Would be hilarious if NEC restrict candidate list to BAME and women, Burnham would have to go trans or black face.

Used to drink in Wallington, I think one of his acolytes was a regular.
