Made the most of his talent to become England’s best player for a few years in the mid 70s.

That was probably his most admirable trait. Of course he had skill but many players have had more and not made themselves as good a player as he was by sheer application and will. He and John Toshack were a formidable pair who were a bit unfortunate to be overshadowed by Rush and Dalglish.
As a manager his enthusiasm was infectious and he let his teams, especially Newcastle, go out and play.

along with Keegan's talents on the pitch, his TV demeanour gave him the makings of a celebrity, a household name. We can take it for granted, but many great footballers lack this.
