Joe Bugner

He was a little unfortunate to be active when there was a crop of good heavyweights around but even so he only lost 13 of 83 fights. He was a good steady boxer, if a bit short of top class.
RIP.

Technically a good boxer with a good chin. However pundits always felt he wasn't aggressive enough. He beat fans favourite Henry Cooper in a controversial result so had that hanging over his career.

An early opponent of his died shortly after their fight and his lack of aggression was always put down to that. I vaguely remember the Cooper fight when it was said that the judges had favoured the young up and comer over the old warhorse but after that Bugner had no chance of being held in the same public esteem as our 'enry.

I wasn't that impressed when he decided to become 'Aussie Joe Bugner' in the 90s.

Cooper certainly wouldn't have done that.

I think the public had good instincts on the chap.

The British public never liked him, but he gave it a go against Ali, Frazier and Ron Lyle and didn't embarrass himself. Got smashed by Earnie Shavers, one of the hardest hitters ever, and ultimately was never quite good enough in an era of top heavyweights.
Lost some fights he should have won through lack of aggression.

Had he been British by birth, he might have been better accepted. Lennox Lewis had a similar problem after representing Canada, but his class won people over.

He didn't sound Hungarian though

He came to Britain as a kid to escape Russian occupation.

His lack of popularity stemmed from him defeating home favourite Henry Cooper with a controversial decision, and then having a couple of poor fights where he lost to average British fighters.

He was never a home favourite like say Frank Bruno.

Or as popular as Billy Walker who wasn't as good a fighter but put on a better show.
