Compared to other Presidents, he seemed gentle, fair-minded, moral, and wise. He was vilified, for weakness, during his Presidency. But i think History will be fairly kind to his memory.
The role of President is certainly a poisoned chalice, nobody could perform the role without having their legacy scrutinized under a microscope. Carter seemed a hell of a lot nicer than the many psychopaths who have sat in the Oval office.

The Oil crisis & corresponding inflation and economic shock was certainly no picnic. I doubt any president could have thrived in that sh1.tstorm.

I spent some time with him at Nelson Mandela’s funeral, he was an absolute gentleman.

There is a saying that you should never judge a politician's career until at least 50 years after they have retired.

I think this applies to Carter. He was disliked whilst President and got trounced by Reagan because the voters felt he failed to handle the issues they cared about. He actually did much better on the international scene but that doesn't help you with the voters back home who didn't have got a job.

However Carter has left a lasting legacy. His focus on human rights and gender equality changed Washington for good. His greatest legacy however will be the humanitarian work that he did post Presidency.

When you compare him to the current crop like Biden, Kamala and Hillary there is no contest.

All in all not a bad life and career.
