James Tomkins

JT was a solid performer for Palace and scored a few important goals, but his appearance record was on the decline before we bought Andersen and Guehi. He failed to play 10 matches in any of his last 4 seasons with the club. I think due to injuries and his struggles with the club moving to a more passing game under Vieira his last 2 contract extensions were overly generous.

I noted he had been without a club since last summer and wondered why a championship club hadn't stepped in (as per Cahill and Dann). Maybe they did but after getting paid c£50k a week at Palace he didn't fancy maybe 1/4 of that and/or a pay as you play arrangement.

He was clearly looking as he waited until the end of transfer window to make the announcement.

Genuinely I thought he retired when he left us two years ago, he hasn’t had another club that’s for sure.

Always liked Tommo though, in his prime and fully fit, one of the best CB’s I’ve seen in a palace shirt, says it all about him that West Ham fans always gave him a good reception when we played them.

He only left in the summer of 2024 - 9 months ago. Palace gave him 2 additional 1 year contract extensions, both it could be argued were generous, the 2nd one in particular made very little sense either financially or from a football perspective.

He wasn’t playing which is why I probably thought he left two years ago…….well that’s my excuse anyway😀
 
I expect he will get into coaching surprised we didn't keep him around in a role.

Odd he didn't go to another club maybe he wanted a break to see what options he had or if he wanted to continue and now decided he is done.
