This is getting embarrassing.

Jake equalises for Everton near the end against Spam.

Not for the first time either he did it last time out.

Marking Mbappe in the French Cup, who would have thought it.

Talk about the one who got away.

Well done Jake.

😎

Yep, I can't remember the last centre half who came up from the U21s into a regular spot in the first team.....Looks like we sold a good one here for peanuts.

He refused to sign a contract, not much we could do. We did get a sell on % when he joined Everton. TBF not sure who he would replace on current form

I didn't know he refused to sign.....annoying, considering we never seem to get any centre halfs from our academy.

Richards.

Said in another thread that I'm still a bit bitter about this one.
Contract or not this was clearly something to do with Textor.

(And by the way re:the above, Richards is playing great right now)

Yes but was that because Textor was whispering in his ear?

I think it stinks that a reserve team player is suddenly sold to a big French side when the rest of the English league were hardly battering down doors to sign him.

I have no proof but I am convinced that Textor did this for his benefit and not Palace. I don't blame the lad he was offered top football at a decent size club when his route to the first team was unclear.

But if Textor hadn't made his move would he have signed again for Palace, I think so.

I dislike multi club ownership, this is what you get.

Sure, Richards is doing well but I was asked who would O'Brien replace....In other words who is the weakest centre half.

We can be pretty sure that Guehi is leaving in the summer so I don't think Richards is under much threat.

O'Brien is more of a threat at corners and a year younger......and much more importantly has a much better haircut.

He could replace Mateta the way he's playing.

Haircut's matter imo.

It doesn't seem long ago that I was standing beside a few men and a dog watching the U21s away at Fulham, he played quite well a reliable type but definitely not speedy.

He has had a remarkable journey whoever spotted that he that something extra and gave him the chance plaudits, and he has certainly grabbed his opportunity, believing in himself.

Not us I'm afraid, my choices as to who could have come through the ranks are either out somewhere or departed.

It's all very speculative - O'Brien was 22 when he left, so no doubt he was desperate to get playing...we were playing a back four with Andersen and Guehi moreorless untouchable as the two centre halves.

I don't think it's at all unlikely that O'Brien would've pushed for a move at that stage of his career, with or without Textor's involvement.

I get the frustration, but I don't think there was much scope to retain him, and I also don't know if he develops on the same trajectory if he doesn't get thrown into first team football in a flailing Lyon side.

I'm glad one of our academy graduates is doing well.

If he had stayed he would still be way down the pecking order and would rarely have gotten any minutes.

He had to do what was best for him and his career.

My first game after the Covid era was when he captained the u21s and won the trophy. I have a fond memory.

I don't think it was a case of Jake not being given a chance, more that he wasn't going to be selected ahead of Guehi and Andersen.

He played, and scored, in the pre season friendly in Chicago in 2023 and I hoped he would establish himself in the first team squad.

However, he wanted first team football and it looks like Textor orchestrated the move to Lyon. Fee wise it's a tricky one - he didn't look like a £16m player when he was at Palace.

We signed him the same day we signed Danny Imray, it looked like they were going to be a future pairing at the back.
Makes you wonder if Imray could be playing just as well if he were given the chance.

Imray has been on loan at L2 Bromley this season. I've seen most of their home games.

Danny has been a standout player at that level. He's clearly capable of playing in a higher standard of football. He's well liked at Palace and his progress is being carefully monitored.

I don't know what you mean about '' if he were given the chance '' - he has to be better than the current player playing ahead of him - in this case Munoz - and he isn't there yet.

Soon after we signed him Imray sustained a serious injury that kept him out for a long time. I rate him and think he has similar traits to Munoz but I don’t think he is ready, yet, for PL

Given the chance, quite literally.
A loan to another PL team, or promotion pushing team, covering Munoz in cup games or God forbid covering Munoz after an injury. Maybe somebody will offer huge money for Munoz this summer.
Given the chance to prove himself at the top level.

But it doesn’t work like that in practice.

Covering Munoz might be good for Palace but not for the player . Danny needed League football and he’s taken his chance with Bromley and was doing well pre recent injury.

The only other club that made a concrete offer for him was Wycombe Wanderers. They were talking about a loan deal or possible purchase but it didn’t come to anything.

Between Mark Bright, the players agent and the player himself they are looking to get the best situation for the player. It’s not as simple as saying he should be loaned to another Premier League club or promotion chasing team !

Right. Well that is why I am saying "it makes you wonder if..."

Why would a premier league club or promotion chasing Championship club want to use one of their loan slots on a player who has only played at L2 level?

I can imagine the uproar if we loaned a player from say, Fulham, who had never played higher than L2.
