When I was younger there were lots of shops selling government and other surplus items. Over the weekend I looked at my change and inspected a nice shiny (new) pound coin. It had the Queen's rather than the King's head.

A little while ago we were told that Charles notes had been printed and many of us saw examples. Since then I only seem to get Elizabeth notes - although I did get a Charles fiver over the weekend.

We have seen Charles stamps - I have a couple of packs - but I bought three eight books of second class stamps - all Elizabeth.

I am getting confused.

You must be a fellow baby boomer - clue was the comment on stamps. I remember surplus shops- they still have one in Wadebridge. They won’t release the new until the old runs out!

There used to be a big surplus store in Croydon can't remember it's name but it used to be a treasure trove of stuff and we used to buy stuff as trends dictated.

That and there used to be ye older boot shoppe in Broad Green to get your DM's

All now long gone....

Fascinating little bit of nostalgia. I recall my mum and dad going to see Bill Haley at the Davis. Tickled pink they were.

Does Millets still exist? I remember their shop at the top end of Surrey Street sold army surplus stuff and I bought an army desert jacket that I wore on a hitch hiking trip to the south of France.

I think Millets became Blacks and that is now closing in Croydon.
