Goalies time-wasting

I read in the paper yesterday that trials have been taking place of limiting the time for which goalkeepers can keep possession of the ball. I seem to remember that something similar was trialled several decades ago, which limited either the number of steps that goalies could take with the ball or for how long they could hold it. That must have been abandoned. Could the HOL referee guru please step forward and remind/enlighten?

The current law is 6 secs from 'in-play' a goal kick is different, then that is down to the ref to decide how long is acceptable. IFAB(the world football law makers) have trialled some 'tweaks' to this very subject in women's & lower league matches across the globe. They are meeting in Feb, i believe, to vote on new amendments to any laws that will come into force as from July 1st 25. These include an 8 second time limit for goalies to release the ball whilst in open play. You'll get England(FA) follow these laws to the hilt, as they always do, & then slowly relax them usually about end of Oct, beginning Nov.

Hope that helps.

This piece on the Mail Online site gives some background. It'll be interesting to see if Pickford change his delaying tactics.

Yes, it does, thank you. On a distantly related topic, I would like to see sanctions against the time-wasting and mind games in which defending teams indulge when a penalty has been awarded against them.

I know what you're saying. The ref always(or should do) add the time on for those activities. Talking of wasting time, the legal way to do it, without any added time, is to go off-side.

This is when Pickford winds me up, right in front of us he’ll put the ball down for a goal kick, then with a big smug smile on that gormless looking face of his he’ll pick the ball up and strole over with it to the other side of the 6 yard box.

Just in case you’re unsure, I hate that prick 😀

It was a bit oblique. Maybe it would be clearer if you didn't sugarcoat things so much.

What they’ll do is get the VAR team to monitor it and time it from when a keeper takes possession of the ball. Then when he goes a millisecond over the 8 seconds they’ll alert the ref who will blow for an infringement. It takes the timing and monitoring out of the referees hands, who already has enough to deal with.

Yet again it will be shite interference from this god awful system, which is taking the enjoyment out of the game and making it all too clinical and sterile.

Agreed. They also need to clamp down on players feigning head injuries. TBF to refs, they have to stop the game, so, make the player go off for 10 minutes for concussion assessment, this would stop it overnight.

The thing that winds me up is that players do need to leave the field for a small amount of time if the physio comes on, but goalkeepers are exempt, for obvious reasons. To stop goalkeepers gaming this loophole, as they always do, I would change the rules to say if a keeper gets the physio on then the opposition can choose one of the other players, who then has to go off for the instead of him.

I like the idea but the danger is that elbows will be flailing everywhere if players know they'll be playing against 10 men for a spell if one makes contact.
