What do you mean? The army sizes fluctuated a great deal in the independence war, often battles were skirmishes and one sided in number and outcome. Lots of ambushes and mercs used. It was a bit unusual.

Yup, French, Indian tribes on both sides, Hessian mercs, Spanish and the Dutch. The "USA" was immature and being fought over everywhere for years, and years after. This was just a much larger skirmish.
