I think this is where we differ from most other nations that take part. They see it as an important cultural event, we see it as more of an opportunity to drink and have a laugh at a variety show.
It doesn't matter how good your artist is, and to be fair we've put forward some pretty capable people in the past, the people who seem to vote on this want large camp showmanship which inherently isn't the British stiff upper lip.
After Wogan stepped down, the EBU banned national commentators from drinking, which I think contributed to the continued erosion of the UK's love for the event. That being said the producers have found more novel ways of getting it into the gantry.
