Yes, that's right Badger, I will always associate her with Jean Brodie. I saw the film at the Croydon Odeon. She was a fine, old school, actress who lived near here and was often seen out and about.

One of, if not the, finest and most prolific actresses of our time. Seven decades of masterpiece roles and cameos, yet most of them always seemed to have a bit of the 'real' Maggie in them.

My favourite among so many: Susan, the alcoholic wife in Alan Bennet's Talking Heads series, A bed Among the Lentils.

Watched a Sky Arts documentary about her recently. She made the brave decision to move from leading actress to character actress at a fairly young age and it paid off playing those dotty acerbic characters.

Actresses often complain how unfair it is that there are no roles for women of a certain age but she, Helen Mirren and Judi Dench showed that is simply not true. What they really mean is that once they start losing the Love Goddess roles to younger women "it's sooo unfair." Well if they had any acting chops like the British dames you can work until you drop picking up awards along the way.

Dame Judi doesn't do much now as she has gone blind otherwise she would still be ripping it up.

The film Nothing Like a Dame is well worth seeing. Conversations between Maggie Smith, Joan Plowright, Eileen Atkins and Judi Dench.
