When I was at school a couple of lads joined the ATC. Don't remember any talk of going up in gliders though - they just seemed to march around.
 
I would applaud any adult who embarks on the largely thankless task of working with kids. Most of the stuff (scouts and cubs) was unpaid.
I always tended to be a bit suspicious of adults who volunteered to work with young lads in the Cubs. I think that sort of volunteer work used to attract a much higher percentage of kiddy-fiddlers, certainly until the advent of Criminal Records checks.
I was always particularly aware of any male adults who were "just checking on the boys in the showers", after a football match

Subs were 3d, but you told your Mum they were 6d, so you could get three pennorth of chips on the way home. Chippie was next Woolworths in Westow Hill.

My cubs and scouts leaders were definitely not dodgy. Although an affair happened years after me so this adultery split the cubs leaders up and the 2 adulterers had to leave with it having a connection to the local church.

But a Sunday football team that had 2 men run it had one who would rub and massage a mix of white oil embrocation and baby oil into into our thighs one by one after we were changed into our kit and sitting down. This was a very successful club with a high reputation. Some professional players played for them. The bloke was single but I remember him joking once with parents in the bar about struggling up the stairs to hump some woman or just if you have a problem getting up the stairs to rump a woman. Anyway, well dodgy.

Farleigh Rovers not that long ago, within 10 years ago, had a maybe 30 year old man who was a coach to very young kids. He was found guilty of online grooming. Don’t know if he did fiddle with anyone.

Alan Smith used to exploit the youth players back in the day. Had them round his house at the weekend on Sunday I expect to wash his car and sweep up leaves and general stuff you’d get your kids to do to earn pocket money. To stay in his good books and get picked. Bit different to today.

Rather like the Church.

8th Erith. Never molested. Our skip was an ex army hard-as-nails joiner by trade.
