Contract Expiry Dates

So, we are now at the point where players whose contracts are up in the Summer can talk to other clubs and sign pre-contracts.

The following are those at Palace who fall into this category.

Question - to whom should the club be offering a new or extended contract?

  • Matthews
  • Ward
  • Clyne
  • Hughes
  • Schlupp
  • Plange
Turner's and Chalobah's loan spells will also end.

I have not included Mitchell as I'm confident he did have his contract extended to 2027.

My own view is that we offer Hughes at least a year but preferably two (he'll be 30 in April).

I would be happy for all the others to be released.

In addition there's also the question of what to do about Players whose contracts are currently due to expire in 2026.

These players are:
  • Guehi
  • Holding
  • Lerma
  • Kamada
  • Ahamada
  • Edouard
Of this second group, we clearly need to get the Guehi situation sorted either by a new contract or selling him (preferably in this window given the way his value will decrease if we leave it till the Summer).

Lerma is already 30 and will be nearly 32 come the end of his contract so it's touch and go whether or not to offer him a 1 year extension at some point. I'm happy for all the others to be let go.

What is encouraging is that the players we really want to stay are longer term contracts as follows:

Summer 2027
  • Munoz
  • Richards
  • Mitchell
  • Eze
  • Mateta
with Rak-Sakyi as a question mark and Ebiowei as someone to release

Summer 2028
  • Henderson
  • Franca
Summer 2029
  • Riad
  • Lacroix
  • Wharton
  • Doucoure
  • Sarr
with Nketiah as a question mark on current showing.

Let the discussion/debate begin.
🙂

Good post DB. Re: Mitchell, the bbc have today included him in a list of players whose contracts are expiring this summer(i hope to god you're right). Mathews, i'd keep as he is an excellent 3rd choice 'keeper & i think the 2nd lowest paid player in the '25', so, for that alone, keep. Did hear some talk of Ahamada going out on loan this 2nd half of season, let's see what transpires.

As for the rest, good assessment & agreed.

Really transitional couple of windows ahead.

Obviously we need to get Hughes tied down to a new deal and I'd hope he'd sign it. Unless the West Ham stuff is true and they offer him silly money, I'd like to think he'd be open to staying.

Matthews, Ward, Clyne, Schlupp and Plange can all go.

If we can sell Ahamada, Edoaurd, Holding and Kamada for basically any fee that would be ideal. Franca's stint has been a disaster too and I can see him going on loan at least after his lay off.

Will leave us with a lot to do though. We need a new RWB and LWB, goalkeeper and CB (even if we sign Chalobah permanently, Guehi is bound to leave) as a minimum and then probably a few younger squad players to fill in the rest of the gaps.

As ever, we are in a situation where the difference in quality between our starting XI and the reserves is enormous, so I'd say improving squad strength rather than just buying 2/3 big players to improve our first team should be the main goal.

And with money an issue, you'd imagine at least one of Guehi or Eze will go to help finance it.

I think from the first group, Mathews 1 year, and Hughes 2/3.
The second group is straight forward, Guehi will have left and the others, none,
The next group, i don't think Muñoz or Mateta will sign, but Mitchell, Eze and Richards will,
The rest are our best players, i think Nketiah will come good as Matetas replacement and if Franca can get Fit, he has all the tools to be a top player
very good post Doombear.

Ward is the one. Club Captain and possibly good at it. However, builds up injuries, never starts when fit and how long does one let sentiment control decisions?

Perhaps get him a role off the playing staff (Team Chaplain given the current religious leaning of the team?) and free up a space.

We got so lucky post lockdown as we were able to rebuild the team cheaply when the transfer market was subdued. There's a fair bit of deadwood that needs to be replaced and we need to start selling to do that. We aren't managing the squad quite right.

Selling the likes of Ayew is exactly what we need to be doing. Sorry guys but not only does he not fit the manager's style, he's actually not that good. And he's old. Speaking of which, see you Clyne and (sniff) Wardy. At the other end of the spectrum is Marc - a great player but simply has to be sold -even as soon as January if a decent bid comes in. Luckily we've maxed (geddit) out with Lacroix. My word what a player.

Kamada was a free transfer so can leave for nothing IMO.

In a football related discussion elsewhere yesterday it was mentioned that most players are mercenaries and will go to where the pastures are greener. There was general agreement to this sage point.
One thing about Parish's reign is that the club tends to hold onto dead wood, to the extent of offering another contract, usually a year or so. I can surmise that Parish feels it safer to trust the dead wood for another year rather than go out, scout, deal with agents, other clubs, and inflated transfer fees. His vaunted hope for talent emerging through the Academy has yet to come to fruition, thus the squad is on the thin side (except Schlupp).
It would be good to see a clear out, many of the players listed above offer nothing to the club's effort to remain in the EPL and hopefully one day press for a Euro place.
