Celebrities who don't deserve to be called stars

I'm thinking specifically of film stars but happy to broaden the topic if people want to.

Let's just start by ruling out any "reality" stars as a given. My definition of a star is "bums on seat" an actor like Tom Cruise. Acting ability does not come into it, can you sell a movie on your own.

So famous people who on closer examination don't really deserved to be called a star. That doesn't mean they are not famous or well known but that their work does not match their celebrity status (bums on seat).

Zsa Zsa Gabor. I would call her the founder of the Z list celebs. Frequently seen on chat shows in the 1970's she was introduced as a film star. A quick look at her career shows she made a few cameo's in several Hollywood movies and "starred" in a few B pictures. But film star? I think not.

George Clooney. This maybe controversial but Clooney whilst a successful TV actor has never really transferred that success into films. Yes he is enormously famous and gets loads of great fawning press but on the whole his films commercially have been patchy. He tends to be successful when working with other big Hollywood stars but on his own not so much.

Julia Roberts. Like Clooney very famous but again her big hit movies tend to be against a big Hollywood male star e.g. Richard Gere Pretty Woman.

Meryl Street. A brilliant actress who chooses to focus on the work rather than the money. It's a bit unfair including her here because she doesn't try to be a "star" but again her movies whilst lauded do not put bums on seats.

Richard Burton / Lawrence Olivier Great actors who made many many flops.

2 actors who do deserve the title are Arnie and Sly. Neither can act their way out of a paper bag, and they are too old now. But back in the eighties they made a shed load of money for their studios and didn't need a big Hollywood star along side them. Most of their movies starred fairly unknown actresses.

Enough from me. Remember ability and awards aren't the point. It's do they sell tickets.

Keanu Reeves is talented at the martial arts, but the fecker cannot act for toffee. That accent in Dracula ?

a true actor is a chameleon who switches into many identities......Laurence Olivier being a good one. Therefore Al Pacino is a shyte actor cos in every movie he is just Al Pacino...same voice, same body language, same clothes, even the same script i dare say.

i enjoy Jean Claude van damm movies precisely because they are so bad and his acting is so cardboard. Its hilarious cos in most of his movies he is an all american hero with a strange back-story to explain away his stupid belgian accent. And he wins every fight by only using kicks to the head and jumping up into the splits to avoid a puddle with electricity...baddies waiting in a queue to fight him....EVERY f...ecking MOVIE. Great xmas entertainment when you are off your face on whatever chemical takes your fancy. A 5' 5'' Hollywood tough guy with all the Street-cred of Liza Minnelli

To answer the OP, any 'star' who is talentless but got there through Pull, influence, connections or other backroom means. Which really means most Stars. Especially Madonna.

Three moderately successful TV actors who now put bums on seats in cinemas, I would say :

Tim Spall.
Martin Freeman
Olivia Coleman

And actors who don't deserve Star status, I would say :

Dame Judith Dench
Patricia Routledge. (Late)
Penelope Keith
Molly Sugden (late)
Effectively just played themselves their whole career

Tim Spall.
i love Timothy. Face like a gargoyle. He never disappoints. Go and watch him as the Reverend ian Paisley if you want to be entertained. And Colm Meaney wasnt bad either as Martin McGuinness.

Another brilliant fella...... David Thewlis

back to the OP......
a big embarrassment......Carol Vorderman. Her star is already in the descendant yet she still craves fame.

A bit harsh imo - his Cuban accent in Scarface was impeccable. His vulnerable but resourceful performance in "Scent Of a Woman" was outstanding and critically acclaimed for good reason.

anyone from a reality tv show and by association anyone who appears in the 'celebrity' spin off equivalent e.g. celebrity big brother.

I just (re)read the definition.

Nicolas Cage. Gal Gadot. And arguably the guy after whose face the plastic mask in the movie Vanilla Sky was modelled: William Shatner.

Did well in his spell at Man Utd.

Vinnie Jones> One of the luckiest people ever born. Not really a great footballer. Not really a great actor. Yet made millions doing both

Christopher Biggins. Never really carried off the hard man role convincingly.

For some reason Biggins reminded me of Alan Carr. Biggins has a bit of talent. Not my cup of tea, but I've seen him working crowds very well in pantomime.
Alan Carr seems to rely on being camp is as hilarious John Inman and Dick Emery in the 1970's. Being gay is now seemingly a talent, worthy of praising on the TV.
How I wish he'd just disappear.
Now I've made myself angry just writing about him.

If you find yourself getting wound up by campness, do what I do and watch Carry on Camping.
Brings you back to reality and reminds you of the true meaning of the word.

The same goes for Julian Clarey and Graham Norton. Not an ounce of talent between them. They happened to be around when the only qualification required in the TV business was to be as camp as Christmas. Their acts just consist of shouting 'look at me, have I told you I'm gay' and spouting innuendos that straight people would never get away with.
