Caleb Kporha

Cant say I'm going to lose any sleep over this one.

Its harsh, but the better our team and squad gets, the harder it is going to be for these guys to break through. They have to be exceptional, or in a position where we have no choice but to fast track them (Mitchel, AWB etc)

A couple of years ago with Clyne and Ward he had a shot. But zero chance with Munoz.

If we cant keep our proteges..?

And what signal sent to the Academy.
A lot of them seem to be finding employment away from Palace. In the same way we offer employment to young players from other clubs.
Probably wages are a factor, with established players getting better wages. The challenge is to offer the right combination of wages and prospects.
They all have a choice and I am watching to see if Ben Chilwell recognises that four future seasons present options
Palace squad player wages
Normal wages for a lower league
Unemployed
It has been said in HOL that he is not needed at Chelsea.

Regarding the Academy and time spent in a Palace shirt leading to success - at a players correct level - I am thinking of Sorloth and Jake O'Brien.

Tricky without any detail. I’d say worth a 2 year deal to see if he progresses. As for money who knows £5k a week, maybe that’s not enough.
It does question the position of the academy. Should we monetise the value of the academy. I think so but there are other views.
Hope something can be sorted for the lad.

Also there is Danny Imray on the horizon as well
Agreed, and I suspect he'll be ahead of Kporha in the pecking order. If we can't agree a contract deal with the lad then the assumption must be that either Kporha thinks he's worth more than the club are willing to offer him or the club won't give him the assurances he's looking for regarding 1st team playing time (or both). Either way, I trust the club to get this right.

I’ve seen a lot of him at Bromley and although he’s been excellent for them, I doubt he’ll be making many if any premier league appearances for us. I’d like to be wrong because he’s a lot like Munoz with his competitive spirit and his desire to get forward, I just think you can add him to our long list of promising young players that once they start going out on loan, that’s it as far as making it in our first team on a regular basis

Youngsters breaking into the first team is always going to be difficult in the Premier, is Kporha going to displace Munoz? Its always going to be a problem with the Academy, unless they are exceptional they have to bide their time or move elsewhere.

I think I read somewhere that that academy costs about £5m a year to run.

99% of players aren't going to be able to make the step up to the prem, which is disappointing, but the reality. Ultimately we need to be aiming, to get to a point where the academy covers its costs

If it is £5m then the AWB transfer paid for it for 9 years. If we sell JRS for £8m that more than covers its costs

Following the academy is a priority for me, and my £3.99 pass gets me a month of Palace TV to enjoy it.

I get just as agitated or disappointed as following the seniors tbh, enjoy attending where possible.

The standard of play very high, we are competing with top PL opposition.

Palace without the Academy, over my dead body!

🙂

The premier league, certainly in terms of depth, is the best soccer league in the world. Munoz, Doucoure, Franca, Kamada, Lacroix, Lerma, Mateta, Riad, Sarr, Richards, Edouard & Devenny are all oversea players on our books who have or will represent their country at international level. There is a big gulf from under 18 and under 21 level to being a first team EPL player. For this reason most players in the academy are not going to play for Palace in the Premier League. We do though produce players of premier league quality maybe once every couple of years. AWB , Mitchell, and O'Brien are recent examples. JRS will also i think play in the EPL.
In my mind it is encouraging to see how many players at Palace are actually playing in the lower divisions albeit on a loan basis. Hopefully they will earn the club some money if they can secure a permanent move and hopefully go on to make a decent living from the game. I can't recall having had this sort of strength in depth in our set up for the 40 odd years i've been a fan.

Obviously the figures would need to be filtered but on a purely numerical basis there are over 1.7 m footballers in the world for every UK player in the Premier League.
The academy is a bit like the lottery in that you're more likely to pick up a few tenners than millions but you've still got to buy a ticket to have any chance at all.

The thing that surprised me with Kporha was how slow he looked for a young fullback. I wasn't convinced by his defending, either. The latter is something that can be worked on, but you need pace at the top level as a fullback or you're done for. The thing with all of this though is that he is 18. He is getting minutes at PL level. What exactly is it he is asking for? Surely he doesn't expect to get in ahead of Munoz? If it's about money then that seems short-sighted unless Palace are being really tight. If OG thinks he has a future with us then hopefully something can be worked out.

Without knowing who the player is taking his guidance from & what's been said, its difficult to know how the situation has reached this point - is he listening to people who know what they are talking about & have his best interests at heart or just someone who is saying what he wants to hear.
