No, it almost certainly won't be remembered, but if these things accumulate, they coalesce - as the previous government discovered - to create an atmosphere of sleaze, hypocrisy and dishonesty, which is then hard to shake off. It seems clear that Starmer's specs and his wife's clothes, along of course with the fuel allowance issue, the Sue Gray affair, etc., have contributed to his current collapse in the polls.

Probably some loophole cos the taxpayer bought them the property, one of them, an IKNdian chap has 50 propperties many in terrible condition about which he knew nothing as th agent took care of it all.

We need a new word that includes hubris, hypocrisy, refusal to admit mistakes, how about wisbeching, just a thought

Certainly the first and third of those qualities - not convinced about the second. But I might add "sneering". In any case, thank goodness I never have ro read his stuff nowadays.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority, which is responsible for MPs pay and expenses, has unveiled plans to change how it publishes information.

The IPSA suggest it will protect MPs from bad publicity.

When I used to claim I often would not bother with small ticket items, on the basis I would probably have bought them for myself anyway.

In the scheme of things it's not a lot of money and is a bit of a bureaucracy for both the MP and the people who vet and pay the expenses. However by publishing them it shows that some MPS are prepared to expense the most trivial of items which goes to their character especially at times when the government is raising taxes or telling us plebs we have to pull our belts in.

A better solution would be to give MPs a daily per diem say £20 so they only claim for big ticket items.

Just £20 a day ? For out of pocket stuff.
Compare that to the £6pw they’ve saved cutting the WFA.
 
I was in Toronto a few years ago with work and I managed to claim back expenses on a day trip to a Niagara falls at the weekend 😄 .........among other things 😅
 
I see that it is reported today that Rayner has had more clothes paid for - she needs them for work apparently.
I know it is a small thing on the face of it but it stinks of preaching on thing while practising another.
Horrible piece of scum that she is - I would expect nothing more.
