Big George Foreman

Deaded.
Former boxing Heavyweight Champion (twice), in his youth he was as ferocious out of the ring, as he was in it. One of the hardest hitters ever.
Turned his life around on finding God, and the face of a worktop grilling machine, which, ironically, made him more money than his boxing career.

RIP, The Punching Preacher, Big George.

A real formidable talent, who was fighting in a golden period of heavyweights.

With more intelligent tactics he would have beaten Ali.

Heavy puncher and an even better chin.

I look at his success when he came back in his late forties as indicative of a small decline in heavyweights.

Sullen in his prime but intelligent and fun as his older version.

Wayward violent youth before boxing, great man during and after.

I remember seeing him at FAO Schwarz in the late 90s, I think he was promoting some sort of Boxing board game? Two things stood out, first he was huge & secondly he was wearing a suit which probably would of taken someone six months of salary to pay for.

Sad. Love his grill though, got a replacement one for my birthday after the original died following about 35 years of faithful service.

If you want to see evidence of his punching power google his victories over Frazier and Norton in the early 70s. Both were at the top of their profession, both had previously beaten Ali, yet GF demolished both in 2 rounds.

George was a very average boxer with a big punch. He smashed anyone who was there to be hit but was slow and easy to hit himself.
It would have been interesting to see him against prime Sonny Liston, Larry Holmes, Tyson or Lennox Lewis to judge where he sits in the all time rankings. We didn't even see a fight against prime Ali. Ali was never the same after his boxing ban.
I'd recommend the fights with Ron Lyle and Jimmy Young if you want to see George's limitations in his prime.

A bit harsh. GF's first loss was to Ali in 74 after about 40 fights undefeated - at a time when the heavyweight division was very competitive.

He was never the same afterwards and took a year or 2 out of the ring. Both fights you mention were after that period in 1976 and 77 when it was clear he had lost something - a bit like Tyson after he came out of jail.

Agree with Ali after his ban - did well to reclaim the title but he was never quite the same.

Quite possibly, but other than Frazier and Norton he fought no one of note.
In his comeback, he lost to every good fighter he fought and beat a very average Michael Moorer to win the title.
He avoided Holmes, Tyson and Lewis and couldn't best Morrison, Holyfield or Shannon Briggs. He was in his mid to late forties, so I'll give him credit for the effort.
