Alex Salmond

Didn't agree with him on Brexit or an independent Scotland but always happy to listen to him, always a good listen.
probably my favourite Scot other than Jim Cannon.
RIP.

A shock, sudden death, 69 just goes to show.

A pain on some matters but I always liked him anyway, he was a sincere person.

RIP

I thought I would leave it for a day.

An odious little man, if he had been English he would have been branded a racist. He may have been not guilty of all the sex offences he was charged with but his personal conduct much like Schofield was sleazy.

As for his supposed policial genius we will never know how much this was him and how much this coincided with North Sea Oil, all of a sudden our friends oop north decided it was Scottish oil.

Yes he brought Scotland to the brink of independence but he blew it because he was unable to demonstrate to the Scottish people what would happen in the immediate post union break up.

His insistence that Scotland would keep the pound, not take it's share of the national debt, and would join the EU when none of these were agreed. In other words he offered the Scottish voters uncertainty versus steady as you go.

He was clever with the sound bite but not a great leader as some obits would have us believe.

Until you mentioned Schofield (Schoolfield) I was starting to warm to him.

I agree with all your observations on the unwise policies he wished for Scotland but personally I found him to be a more agreeable version of Scottish independence than the other versions found so far.

The Scots feature heavily in the movers and shakers that created the British empire....far out of proportion to the percentage of the British generally.

Cannon tops the list of my Palace legends.

I will tip my hat if they ever leave and have sadness due to that part of my genetic heritage but if the Jocks travel back home at least England will have slightly more alcohol to drink on the weekend.

If you are going to ask a nation to take a leap of faith then you need to demonstrate that you are competent to govern and that you have a plan for the future. Both Salmon and Sturgeon failed on both these points.

Both got away with a lot of stuff in Scotland due to the incompetence of the opposition. The SNP has been a disaster for Scotland most of the key metrics have gone down under their stewardship yet they got away with it until recently by yelling Braveheart and blame the English.

If they had been leaders of the UK government they would not have lasted as long, it is quite staggering that the Scots overlooked their errors for so long.

Swinney I hope has taken the lesson on board, first govern with competence then call for independence.

Newsreaders Trevor McDonald & Moira Stuart.

Naomi Campbell. Michael Jackson. Diana Ross. Sprinter Ben Johnson.

The Scots were deeply ingrained in the slave-trade. And left their surnames as a legacy for posterity. And that's not even mentioning the sectarian mess they left in Northern Ireland and the brutal treatment of the Maori's in New Zealand.

The SNP like to blame England for all their woes. But its not as simple as that.

A man whose career relied on peddling the absurdity of Scottish independence.
