Apparently he has rejected pro terms with us and will be leaving in the summer. Such a shame as he seems to show huge promise. An article suggests he wants to leave due to a lack of opportunities to reach the first team. Not sure how correct this is and he is the 3rd player to do the same.

Does anyone have more information on this?

Born 2007 - will be eighteen this year. Listed in under 18 group, and also under 21. I see his inclusion in under 21 group as an opportunity given.

Hasn’t been a problem for Devenny, if you’re good enough you’ll get your chance
Devenny is almost 4 years older and has only become a squad member this year so that is not a great comparison
There seems to be a much greater movement of Academy players in general as soon as they turn 18 and can sign professional contracts. Man U have been active in this area - maybe because youngsters will have a better chance to get into a team that will be facing relegation in the future
It is all well and good boasting about a great Academy but if it does not produce first-teamers or more than compensation fees then it lessens its value

True and this is why some clubs tried to close theirs but apparently it is a rule EPL clubs have to have one. While we would love the academy to produce a flow of first teamers the reality is the sale of AWB and having Mitchell break through probably cover the costs in themselves. If we sell JRS for something like £10m then that is enough to justify it.

I know Devenny didn’t come through our ranks, but the point is if you’re good enough you will come through into the first team, very few of our academy players do end up good enough. The so called lack of opportunity is simply because they’re not good enough despite what everyone around them fills their heads with

My point is that you cannot write off Derry when he only 17

Having watched him a number of times I think he’s decent.

I also get the feeling, based upon nothing other than a perception, that he’s a bit of a big time Charlie. I may be well wide of the mark.

On the face of it he’s been offered a better deal to go and sit on someone else’s bench or be loaned out.

True but neither should we offer him the keys to the kingdom. Bostock was rated higher at his age.

We offer him a fair deal if he sees his career is being better at Chelsea or Moan United let him go. I cannot understand why any youngster would feel they have a better chance of breaking through at those clubs rather than palace.

Now if he dropped down a level, say he signed for Charlton that would make sense, he would get game time and a real chance to build his career before getting the big money move, I doubt that will happen though as they cannot afford his wages.

He hasn't been a standout player in the U21 games I've seen, so why he would he would think he should be near the first team seems questionable. I've been more impressed with others like Zach Marsh and Hindolo Mustapha, but they don't seem near the first-team either. Derry is a kid though so whatever he and his family think is right is up to them and I'd wish them no ill. One minute these kids are being hyped as being scouted by Barcelona the next minute many are being released and struggling to get a deal in League Two or lower. The idea they should be loyal to us is a bit rich when most are released.

Perfect for Chelsea then! A few years in the under 21s, a couple of appearances for the first team , benched and paid £100k a week, then loaned to us for 6 months to teach him how to play football.

We've consistently demonstrated our trust in young players. Some progressing from the ranks, some bought in elsewhere.

But the universal truth is that if you are good enough you are old enough.

If he thinks somewhere else will give him a better chance, good luck to him.
