Why are we worse at home?

We are a counter attacking team. A lot of our goals come from turning the ball over and breaking quickly. At home teams can sit back and we can’t break them down.

A minor factor might also be that our pitch is small which limits space in behind defences. Mateta and Sarr are at their best when they can run into space. See Mateta’s goals against Ipswich, Leicester and West Ham.

It’s a good question….though I wonder sometimes if we the fans contribute to the issue.

Example: when the place is buzzing - we generate the most incredible atmosphere - and the players really lift their game.

When we moan & groan - like when Eze passes the ball backwards instead of starting a new attack - team confidence takes a bit of a beating and nerves sets in.

I could of course be talking absolute rubbish - but just my thoughts…

We often have more space to operate when away from home.
The onus tends to be on the home team to attack more which leaves us gaps to exploit.
This helps Sarr, Munoz and Mateta.

It could be argued that Glasner’s preferred set up is more suited to away games, but can be a hindrance when at home and encountering teams defending deeply.
It was evident on Sunday that Eze had a half chance in the first minute and then Mateta had a good shot saved shortly afterwards, but then there was nothing really until our goal in the last few minutes.
We created almost nothing, and the Brentford defence was fairly comfortable.

As others have pointed out, we would probably benefit from a Plan B on occasions.

Good point.

We're generally (as are all bottom half teams) at breaking down defences that sit in. A lot will come to do that at Selhurst.

Indeed, probably on account of the fact that we were pedestrian, did not move the ball fast enough, we lacked vitality and energy.Us poor supporters travelled in inclement weather and witnessed utter dross.

Perhaps the inclement weather played a part in us not really able to get going. Lets be honest Brentford were not much better so I think we should put it down to a bad day at the office. We hit the post in the second half, Mateta had a really good effort saved in the first half. Had a soft penalty given against us and a softer decision to retake. It definitely was not utter dross.

Mateta's shot, although firm, was at a good height for the keeper. A low shot to the left of Flekken might have paid dividends.
With respect,I did not view the penalty decision as "Soft", it was the correct decision as was the decision to order a re-take.
I stand gummed to my position regarding my "Utter dross" comment, we will have to agree to disagree.
I assure you I used different terminology at the ground !

Perhaps not so minor.

Saw a recent interview where a player said his worst place to play was Selhurst wholly due to the size of the pitch. he was a runner and needed to space. Small grounds impede him.

Perhaps we have more speedsters in our ranks who are not able to open up as the space runs out.

Solution - have a squad that caters for that?

I have a season ticket and maybe get 8-9 games a season. I once went almost 2 seasons without seeing a win at home. 😯

I havnt seen a win since we beat Newcastle last season 2-0 in April. And I have been to 6 games since.

Atmosphere definitely isn't what it used to be. Could be the change in demographics.

Our supporters have only witnessed 17 Home wins in the last 50 Home games in the PL.
This season only 2 Home wins in 12 Home games, 1 of which was against rock-bottom Southampton.

It does make me laugh when all the pundits come out with Selhurst is a hard place to come for away teams. It’s one of the biggest myths in football, I don’t know where that’s come from. Small dressing rooms and tight corridors and tunnel and no hot water maybe, but out on the pitch we’ve been pretty generous to away teams for years now.
It’s a tough place for away FANS to come, but then it’s a tough place for some home fans as well. When the away fans are singing ‘selhurst is a shithole I wanna go home’ I find myself nodding in agreement 🤣

Palace didn't win for the first 17 games I went to. Quite why I bother sometimes is a question.
