I can't think of a premier league side over the last 20 years to regularly play 442, certainly not with two wingers and two forwards. It's just too much to ask of the central midfielders, who would so often be outnumbered. I can imagine playing with four midfielders and not much width, but that's not what most of us mean when we say 442.
There is always a tension between (1) picking a system and formation that best suits your players, or (2) going with a system you believe in and teaching or buying players to suit it. For me, given what we've spent on Larsen and Johnson, we must now find a manager whose formation suits what we've got. We cannot have a system that doesn't suit these guys, as we won't be able to sell them for the same money we paid and surely won't be able to spend much more on alternatives.
I think a front 3 with width is critical. I could imagine Sarr, Larsen, Johnson playing together in that shape. Then it's either three central midfielders or two holding midfielders and a more creative player (perhaps Pino, though there is precious little sign of him being capable). That all necessitates a back four.
I've just watched Bournemouth against Sunderland, and remain convinced that Iraola should be our number one managerial target. He may have his sights set a little higher, but his teams play directly and at pace, use fast wide players, get the ball in the box at every opportunity, and charge around the place forcing the issue. The Bournemouth right back, Jimenez, was everywhere at once in a way that would suit Munoz.
