Matchday eagle

Animal rights group urges Crystal Palace to retire bald eagle mascot

"A leading animal rights group has urged Crystal Palace to retire their American bald eagle mascot because, it says, the matchday experience can leave the bird “frightened, disoriented and panicked” and put spectators at risk."

What do we think? Does sound like our team on Saturday?

I remember being in the front row for a game years ago when Kayla was the pre-match mascot (believe she's passed on now) and the trainer landed her on the advertising hoarding right in front of me. Was very cool and the whole thing was a magnificent spectacle. But if the eagle is genuinely under stress from this novelty it does seem cruel to continue it. Last few times I went the eagle wasn't there though, I thought it had stopped already?

Yes absolutely fair. If it's in distress then it would be cruel to continue it.

I was over for the first home game and the eagle and trainer was outside the ground. I don't think they have the eagle flying around the stadium anymore?

All a bit harsh. Chris Richards isn’t even bald!

Definitely not seen them fly one for a while but I don't get to many games. I think there was an issue with the wind once vs Everton where Kayla sort of blew out the stadium. I think that was when they started to get a bit more cautious about it.

phoenix is quite young and so they are training him to get used to the stadium, crowd etc before he does what kayla (who passed away during lockdown from a heart attack) used to do.

I think he may've been in stadium before m'boro cup game but i was late to the game so cannot confirm.

The club did a nice tribute cover to kayla when she passed. I think it was against chelsea in 2021.
