Been a Palace supporter for about 4 years now and by chance happened to be in UK last Saturday on the back end of family trip in Ireland.
Shout out to @Hughes1861 for the away end ticket by the way. Came through in the clutch.
This was my first EPL game ever and was blown away at the experience. I enjoyed the segregated fans from the rest of the crowd and enjoyed great talks with folks in red and blue nearby. Not having a beer in the seats is a bit different but didn’t even notice once it began.
I’m a huge college football (Baylor) and baseball (Texas Rangers) fan and this was such a shift in my viewing experience. In a good way too.
First of all the new Everton stadium is incredibly nice. Rivals new stadiums in the states. I liked how they incorporated the existing old stone wall as a barrier to their entrance. Easy in and out and seems like the place was designed to keep sound in.
I enjoyed no advertising during the game. It was weird not to hear the PA announcer much - only during goals, subs, etc. I liked that. No music during play because it never stops. American sports have so many ads and music built in since it has many breaks in action and the silence from the speakers was a pleasant change from what I’ve grown up experiencing at games. And it was fast. Starts at 3pm and I’m outside stadium walking back at 5pm. I love that about the sport.
I expected Everton fans to be much louder than what I saw. Palace fans standing and cheering/singing majority of the game and Everton fans sitting and only loud after their goals and a bit during the second half.
Is this normal for other EPL clubs? I know Palace fans are known for that but is it as dead in the home crowd as I saw in the first half with Everton fans? I know it’s not a proper rivalry or anything but this was the first game of the season at home for them. I guess I expected more.
That morning I walked by Anfield and Goodison Park. Goodison looks like it was a fun and classic place to watch a game but looked quite small and out of date. Wild how close those 2 stadiums are.
I look forward to return for a home game at Selhurst one day. Although losing 2-0 was rough I enjoyed the day. I will say the Scouse accent is quite annoying and was happy once I was in the away end talking to folks from South London.
This guy from Fort Worth, Texas will be a Palace fan for life and if any of yall find yourself here I’ll be happy to meet up and buy you a pint.
