Only because other teams key players developed mysterious injuries and pulled out.
Possibly because some of the big teams (Arsenal) had a sudden attack of Lazarus disease.
It was first recognised during the 1990's and especially affected Man United players of Welsh descent. Symptoms include being unfit for a meaningless international but "Lo he comes forth" 3 days later to play for his club.
