
For the older fans amongst you there's an interesting article about Silkman which sadly I'm not clever enough to copy for you.
He makes some interesting observations about the modern game
- dribbling is discouraged so as a young player Ronaldo would not have been allowed to develop to the highest levels he achieved
- players like Owen and Fowler would not be succesful goalscorers in the modern game, not because of lack of talent, but because they would be stationed out wide
- successful striking pairs such as Toshack and Keegan are almost outlawed these days (i.e playing 2 strikers together)
- there's an over reliance on data in an attempt to deceive your own eyes i.e player has played well based on running or passing stats even when it's clear that he has not impacted a game
- the lack of modern 'characters' ( he even name checks Harkouk).
These utterings could be dismissed as the meanderings of a grumpy old man, but I agreed with many of them.
