I am no stato. But hasn’t he taken them all past 2 seasons. And scored them all? Then there was OG criticism of him at Citeh..strange mood among players last night. Eze looked like he’d never taken a penalty in his life. Are there rumours of behind scenes falling out/implosion? OG looked absolutely shell shocked after and during game . Similar tonkings ahead vs Bournemouth and the arse unless something different and better is tried. Awful prep for a cup semifinal

Mateta has scored from the 4 penalties he has taken over the past 2 seasons.

As I said on the match thread, the recent implosion and seemingly lack of team spirit suggests that something is going on behind the scenes, I cannot think of any other reason.
I did expect any points in last 2 games but last night there was no fight, team spirit appeared lacking.

I really, really, hate the stuttering penalty nonsense. I would fine any of my players that did it. It should be banned, the penalty taker should have to run at the ball in a continuous movement.
Currently 'Feinting' in the run-up to take a penalty kick to confuse opponents is permitted
as part of football. However, feinting to kick the ball once the player has completed the run-up is considered an infringement of 'Law 14' and an act of unsporting behaviour.

I agree and what it also shows is that, if the keeper doesn’t move, the taker is flummoxed
By the time the taker has completed his stop start tip tap dance routine he's upon the ball and at the wrong angle to get any useful purchase on the ball. Saka 10 times the player Eze is did the same. It's a malaise that should be stomped (see what I did there) out on the training ground.

I have witnessed several penalties, dispatched with aplomb, with the takers adopting a stop-start technique.

Equally I've seen penalties missed using this technique. Thing is one should be decisive from the start and have the ability to finish what one has decided on. Eze showed neither.

Fair enough the clue is in the name but the laws are too biased in favour of the taker who can apparently do pretty much what he wants.

In the IFAB'S law changes 2023/24 report, Law 14 'The penalty kick' states: "Clarification that the goalkeeper must not behave in a manner that fails to show respect for the game and the opponent, i.e. by unfairly distracting the kicker.

"The defending goalkeeper must remain on the goal line, facing the kicker, between the goalposts, without touching the goalposts, crossbar or goal net, until the ball is kicked. The goalkeeper must not behave in a way that unfairly distracts the kicker, e.g. delay the taking of the kick or touch the goalposts, crossbar or goal net."

With a semi coming up its a bit worrying about pens.

I'm also surprised JP didn't take it. Confidence issue? To be fair all of his have been rubbish pens, but somehow went in.

Eze is not a pen taker in a month of Sundays. We can talk about the stuttering run up, but the whole purpose of that is that you wait for the keeper to move and then decide. If the keeper doesn't move than the minimum you should be doing is passing it in the corner.

But to be fair, looking round that team last night I dont know who is.

Conterversial, but might have given it to Marc. Feels like the most stable under pressure.

We are screwed if it goes to penalties against villa.

In my memory only Jedinak or Luka took good penalties. And AJ I do remember Luka missing 1 against city tho in the last minute and AJ missing one against maybe derby or Preston 😅

Even Zaha was a bit hit and miss with them.

The rule changes were brought in because of Martinez's antics. Or Raddy Antic's martinis. Or something.
The dilemma for England fans was who to support but when Argentina's constant disgusting, disgraceful behaviour emerged, we all started eating cheese and felt like surrendering. Martinez was at the fore - but it was the whole team. Presumably compensating for being a weak nation.
