No surprise here. The government has no idea of who is here or has overstayed.
In 2017? Mrs May said there were 3.5m EU citizens in the UK who will be offered residency. When the scheme ended 3 years later over 5m had been granted the right to stay. It says it all.
If the government can be so wrong about people who are here legally and not hiding what chance is there they are hopeless about people who have arrived illegally or overstayed.
Tories must take the main blame but then again what did Blair do when he was in power. Other countries count em in and out.

For those who are particularly concerned about this part of any immigration problem. This has to be good news, as France has now changed its law enabling police to do just this. We have paid enough for it, finally they can actually prevent the immigrants from taking the risk of attempting to cross dangerously. This has never happened before, as the police didn’t have the power to enter the water and disrupt the attempt to leave the beach. I thought they had addressed this already? Wasn't there something about foreigners not being able to claim benefits for 5 years or am I imagining it.
Anyway great idea why didn't you do it when you were in power. Considering how easy and open to abuse PIP is this is another magnet that needs to be demagnetised.

I've posted about this before - you aren't entitled to benefits for five years yet we can see that it is not enforced for certain people. I'm presuming they have paid for mates in social welfare depts.

Does time spent in prison, for say child rape or terrorism for example, qualify towards the five years?
France changing its laws regarding this is a fact. Yes the police have to continue to act on it. It is an important move forward however in preventing at least a bigger percentage of illegal crossings. Probably not a complete answer but an improvement and not just propaganda.
Indeed they have changed the law, about time. However, will it last? I’m not confident. Why? because if, in the unlikely scenario, they stopped all the boats, the French would be left with thousands of undocumented migrants, what would they do with them? Certainly wouldn’t be a vote winner

I agree. They have been stymied by their own laws which were being exploited.
Now they can act, so we must watch and see that they do.
It won’t be perfect, but it should get better.
It’s not the solution though. Stopping the people smuggling gangs is the only real answer.
