Is this season a bit dull ?

Location
Petersfield
Country
England
I know I am risking a lot of abuse of the "you ungrateful b*****d" variety, but is anyone else finding this league season a bit tedious ? Our matches don't matter as much as usual because we have been safe for several weeks. The agony of Saturday afternoons is much less, and the ecstacy of a win has been replaced by a gentle satisfaction.

Of course I should be delighted, but it's not quite as exciting as flirting with danger and then pulling clear. I might change my mind if we win the cup of course.

Know what you mean but it's a relief to spend a bit of time on the merry-go-round rather than the usual bungee jumping.

I completely agree.

I can imagine next season will be much of the same.

We always flirt a little bit with the bottom 3 at the first part of the season and then pull well clear.

It's groundhog day every year. We struggle a bit and then hit our purple patches then struggle and purple patch etc...

It's just that our purple patch has come earlier than usual this time ! Maybe if we became serious contenders for a European place...even then the jeopardy is not as great though.

Despite reading the board regularly and posting a bit, between matches I seldom really think or care a lot about the squad. My energy centers on the matches themselves. Because of that, I've found the season to be a rewarding one, for I feel we begin every match with the confidence that if we play well we can draw or win.

So for me, it has been a fine season, one in which my faith in Dougie to assemble and Ollie to manage a good team has been amply rewarded despite the losses of Olise, Andersen, and Chalabah. My only regret is that Eze and Wharton have seldom appeared to be fully fit. At their best, they are quietly thrilling players to watch, one for flair and the other for vision. Muñoz's end-to-end focus and work rate are things of beauty. There are no players in the Prem whom I'd rather watch and root for, than these three.

I’m not sure what some people want, if you can’t enjoy it while we’re scoring goals and winning, I don’t know why you’d bother.
I disagree about Europe as well, as someone who was around in 1991 when we were robbed of a European place and remembering how gutted I was I’d love a bit of European football, it’s the prize you get for a successful league campaign and who wouldn’t want that either?
Yes it could cause us problems in the league with the size of our squad and the extra games and travelling, but I thought the league was dull, right?🙄 So a bit of European football would be something different and possibly add to the excitement

We did get some crappy European football that we lost straight away.

I think it's a problem with most teams in the prem with backwards and sidewards football it's a bit boring, I do miss the direct style of football played in the 80s n 90s

I'm more than happy for Palace to go into March free of relegation worries.

And we still have more to look forward to than most ; FA Cup Quarter Final and a chance to better last seasons finishing position.

In terms of football in general, I thought our game against Ipswich lacked quality and wasn't too far removed from a Championship level match.

Then I watched Man Utd v Arsenal and West Ham v Newcastle and came to the conclusion that the standard of play in the Premier League in general isn't what it was.

I'm not finding it boring at all. But I get that there is no immediate danger etc.

Whats exciting for me is the progression of the squad. Its quite remarkable over the course of a few seasons we've completely changed the team. Mush younger, much more valuable, and now everyone is fit, much deeper.

A real yardstick is the number of international call ups we are now regularly getting.

I think a European push this season is going to be a little bit out of reach, but I've got real confidence that we could do a Forest next season.

The PL season is all fits and starts and never really gets going.

More boring breaks for events of little interest, one mid-season break is necessary but I don't really recognise all these stops and starts.

The West Ham V Newcastle game was awful. Given how much they’ve spent West Ham have a squad seemingly devoid of any exciting players.

It's a weird season in general, a bit like when Leicester won the league. So many of the bigger teams have been out of sorts, leaving Liverpool to stroll to the title. Meanwhile, the bottom three have never really looked like they're going to survive (especially Saints and Leicester). The lack of jeopardy perhaps takes the edge off in terms of the season as a whole, but I get passionate as soon as the game kicks off even when there's nothing riding on the result, so it's never dull for me.

I would love to see us make it into Europe and with OG at the helm we may even have a chance of progressing to the latter stages. It would also make us a more appealing option when it came to signing players. I can't see us making it through a league placing with the form of those above us, but who knows with the cup.
