Lyon away - Europa league

The games are coming thick and fast now. After our stunning victory on Sunday we travel to Lyon for the Thursday game. We really need to tighten up the defence and if we can do this, the team looks like it’s better at converting chances than under OG. I don’t mind that JSL isn’t getting on the scoresheet a lot, as long as someone keeps scoring, it’s fine. There is a lot more support from the midfield now hence the Kamada goal to equalise on Sunday.

Sage is not stupid and I am sure he will look to shore up the defence notwithstanding that he likes a big forward press. Our wingbacks have to be able to defend and not just attack. I suspect they are only doing as instructed but regardless, we need to cut out individual errors like Khalaili on Sunday. If all are fit, I would go with this side.

Henderson

Khalaili ( hopefully to increase his confidence and understanding of his role)
Mitchell

Richards
Disasi
Tomiyasu

Wharton
Timber
Kamada

Sarr
JSL

I think this should be the core of our first choice side with Mateta and Pino as back up for the forward line. Obviously Canvot, Minguez and Honest can deputise at the back and I have high hopes for Doucoure challenging for a midfield spot as required.

Sage knows the Lyon team which is a bonus , having managed and played against them . So Im looking for a positive result

I am glad you are positive.

They are a very good team.

The last time we played French opposition (under Sage) we were easily beaten 3-0.

And our defence must be one of the most generous in the league.

If we can get a clean sheet, we will have done very well indeed.

Haven't conceded in two cup games so far! 😉 Don't ask me how we managed that as we were woeful defensively at times against both Boro' and Posnan.

7-6 win to Palace. Six down at HT due to some own goals and iffy defending, but a triple brace from Will Hughes brings us back level in the second half. Benitez, refusing to settle for a draw, drills a cleared back pass right down the centre of the pitch into the middle of the net, leaving their goalie sprawling.

That was really a friendly. Plus he had just taken over so cant read anything into it

I think Pino is undroppable (is that a word?) at the moment. Really hitting his stride now. He's the type of player in the type of form you have to let loose on Lyon.
Surprised Sarr didn't play more of a role against Forest but he's a gret weapon to have on the bench

Totally and utterly irrelevant, it was an early pre season Micky mouse half hour each way friendly where most of our first choice were still away at the World Cup

It’s great to share different opinions.Football and all sport is a confidence game. We need that! The defence playing a solid game would be very welcome.

Agree. I think Pino has been at his best in the European competitions and is starting to bring some of that to the premier league

I think he will be wanting, expecting and getting a start against Lyon

It's good Disasi is available. Although we want to bed in a consistent defence it has to be the right group and I think he is the main man in the middle. If he can stay on pitch.
