Why is this type of thing a discussion point? What exactly is new, or different, or unsurprising in a player wanting to leave Palace for more money, status, or better prospects?
Why is it different to any line of work? How many of us are loyal to our employer to the point we would disregard the prospect of bigger and better things that we want and could have?
Think of every player we ever signed. What do we think motivated them to come to Palace? What percentage of them did it out of some sort of prior affection for the club?!
Why is a player wanting to leave some other club to join us different to them wanting to leave us for some other club?
No, they are self-employed contractors who make business decisions in their own best interests. The reasons they might want to leave are the same as the reasons they wanted to join, and we were happy enough with it then.
If that makes them sound heartless then consider how many players Palace have, and will always, let go once they stopped being useful. Loyalty is a two-way street. Football clubs discard players every bit as quickly and often as players seek to leave clubs. If Mateta picked up a career-threatening injury with a dubious long-term prognoses tomorrow, would Palace keep that contract offer on the table out of 'loyalty'? Would they f***. It'd be whisked away immediately.
When has it ever been different?
Mateta has every right to explore his contractual position if it is in his interests to do so, as do you and I in our places of work. So long as he continues to turn up to work and do his best, everything else is his business. If he starts wandering about the pitch not trying, or refuses to turn up, then we have something to complain about. Otherwise, criticising him is just childish nonsense.
Is Sarr injured? Who knows? We certainly don't. Is this first player to feel a bit injured when a big move might be on the cards? Of course not. You never pull a sickie? More to the point, how many players that we signed or were trying to sign were mysteriously omitted from their teams at the time? Its not unique or even unusual.
Until they ever fix the godforsaken f***ing transfer window system so that it ends before the football starts, this type of thing will always happen. Every player, club, and manager kicks off the season in some degree of uncertainty that will linger until the window closes.
There is nothing unusually greedy, dishonest, or unpleasant about the players we have at the moment.
