Greedy Scum

Terrible day to be a Palace fan today. I can take losing but not what is happening with Sarr and Mateta if the reports are correct. From now on the players we sign have to realise that we won’t be blackmailed as a Club and that this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated. Anyone playing up will have to train on their own and made to see out a long period not playing. It’s the only way to deal with these overpaid, greedy and disrespectful people.

Given there’s a report saying he’s (Sarr) is injured, which he could well be, and we’ve heard nothing to suggest otherwise, I think people are jumping the gun a bit. He doesn’t strike me as the sort of player who’d simply go on strike to force a move.

Mateta’s in the final year of his deal. We had an opportunity there, just as we did with Guehi. People complained that we didn’t take the money for Guehi, but equally he could have seen out his contract and left for nothing.

At the end of the day, these players are under contract for a set period on wages agreed at the time. If they start refusing to train or play halfway through it to force a move, then yes, I think that’s pretty poor. But it works both ways. The club is only entitled to their services for the period they’ve signed for.

Calling either of these two “scum” is taking it far too far. Your argument is they lack loyalty, yet you’ve gone out on an unconfirmed situation and labelled them “greedy scum”. I suspect the irony may be lost though.

The simple fact is that Palace are going to be a feeder club to bigger clubs to some extent. Like it or not, that’s the reality. Were Olise and Eze scum because they left Reading and QPR respectively to come to us? No, obviously not. They saw the chance to progress their careers.

Personally, I don’t see Sarr suddenly going on strike over this. I agree modern players and agents can have far too much power, but in the case of these two they’ve done their jobs admirably for us. Until there’s actually some evidence they’ve behaved badly, I think it’s pretty unfair to start throwing labels like that around.

I'm with you here.
I'm sick sore and tired of these c**** ripping the granny out of our club.
There's ways to leave in a decent manner yet these clowns try this shitty way.
f*** off!

You do know that's exactly what Sarr did when he was at Watford, common knowledge that.

Every club is a feeder club to the "top 6" just look at Newcastle and villa. And I'm sure the clubs in championship feel the same to the middle table prem clubs like us. It is what it is.

One of the worst things about the modern game, player power.

Sadly most of the top players are just mercenaries, they get too big for their boots and want to go to the highest bidder. They might kiss their badge etc when they score, but they don’t really give a s*** about the clubs and fans they play for. You see their true colours when they get a sniff of interest from a bigger club and more money.

Shame they can’t all be like Marc Guehi

I’m a big Mateta fan but now agree it’s best he goes but would prefer it’s to a foreign team. Maybe Galatasaray could take him instead of Sarr. And Sarr needs to publicly announce he is delighted to stay. Probably best we cash in on Munoz as well. It looks like this is going to be a year of transition so right now I’d settle for a squad of committed players, finish 15th and get a run in Europe.

Why is this type of thing a discussion point? What exactly is new, or different, or unsurprising in a player wanting to leave Palace for more money, status, or better prospects?

Why is it different to any line of work? How many of us are loyal to our employer to the point we would disregard the prospect of bigger and better things that we want and could have?

Think of every player we ever signed. What do we think motivated them to come to Palace? What percentage of them did it out of some sort of prior affection for the club?!

Why is a player wanting to leave some other club to join us different to them wanting to leave us for some other club?

No, they are self-employed contractors who make business decisions in their own best interests. The reasons they might want to leave are the same as the reasons they wanted to join, and we were happy enough with it then.

If that makes them sound heartless then consider how many players Palace have, and will always, let go once they stopped being useful. Loyalty is a two-way street. Football clubs discard players every bit as quickly and often as players seek to leave clubs. If Mateta picked up a career-threatening injury with a dubious long-term prognoses tomorrow, would Palace keep that contract offer on the table out of 'loyalty'? Would they f***. It'd be whisked away immediately.

When has it ever been different?

Mateta has every right to explore his contractual position if it is in his interests to do so, as do you and I in our places of work. So long as he continues to turn up to work and do his best, everything else is his business. If he starts wandering about the pitch not trying, or refuses to turn up, then we have something to complain about. Otherwise, criticising him is just childish nonsense.

Is Sarr injured? Who knows? We certainly don't. Is this first player to feel a bit injured when a big move might be on the cards? Of course not. You never pull a sickie? More to the point, how many players that we signed or were trying to sign were mysteriously omitted from their teams at the time? Its not unique or even unusual.

Until they ever fix the godforsaken f***ing transfer window system so that it ends before the football starts, this type of thing will always happen. Every player, club, and manager kicks off the season in some degree of uncertainty that will linger until the window closes.

There is nothing unusually greedy, dishonest, or unpleasant about the players we have at the moment.

The big difference though is that Clubs have to honour a player’s contract. Even if he’s s*** or injured they have to keep paying him for the duration of the deal. Players, on the other hand, can stop trying, feign injury, talk to other clubs through an intermediary or simply refuse to play.
