Johnson, McNeil

No, its not in place of but with, similar with Muñoz and Mingueza, Mitchell is a great LB, but doesn't have the attacking instinct's of Muñoz, i think McNeil could be the missing piece, no opposition makes a plan to stop Mitchell, they do Muñoz, i just have a hunch it could work, i hate 3-4-2-1, but if you are going to play it you need dangerous attackers in both WB roles, that is the idea of the formation, the 10s drop inside and the WBs overlap.
I could see us bringing on McNeill for Mitchell if we were behind at home and the opposition were defending deep and letting us have the ball. He would be more wing than back in such circumstances. As your have said, his crossing would be a potential asset.

Otherwise, he's a round pegs in a square hole in that position, for me.

Yeah, and I can't see McNeill playing wing back very often even if we didn't have Sosa. It's not his position. I'm not sure he fits into the 343 system at all, in fact. And he's bang average. And we're making a big loss on Johnson.

I'd still do the deal in a heartbeat, though!
It is the perfect position for him, even Glasner saw that, and was gutted when it fell through.

Apparently - straight swap. - medical Monday🤷‍♂️

I'm not sure he's ever shown sufficient defensive nouse. He seems like a hard working winger, a bit like Townsend, but I'm not sure that's enough.

It might suit him in terms of attacking, but even then it's very different starting on the wing in build up play, which is what he's used to, compared to overlapping from deep, which is what he'd be doing.

I can see why you feel he has some of the ingredients, but I'm not sure he has them all.

He'd probably have a better chance if Mitchell was playing left of the back three, but I can't see that happening. Or working.

Again, I'll take him, though to be rid of Johnson.

as do we all (except, apparently the people who matter). I reckon there'll be more to it than a simple swap. Perhaps there are big not too difficult to achieve add-ons on the Johnson side of the deal.
Otherwise it’s £15M - deal that fell through on the last day of the last window for McNeil was £20M..!! 🤷‍♂️

That’s a long shot. But if it comes to pass then you are the new HOL guru !!!!!!!

Setting aside how bold this idea is, it essentially makes Mitchell, one of our best, most consistent performers, redundant, no?

It's a squad game these days and McNeil gives us more flexibility if we want a left sided option in a 4 man midfield .

Pino, Johnson and Guessand haven't looked comfortable in.the wide left area always seeking to get the ball on their right foot and cut in.
I like the idea of Mitchell and McNeil as two naturally left footed players combining down the left to stretch the pitch and provide width at least for spells in games.

Most opposing teans play with one striker and at times our 3 central defenders seems like overkill.
People moaned about Glasner not having a plan B or on occasions not moving to a 433 or 4411.
McNeil would allow for flexibility in formations and provide much needed balance down the left.
He would also vastly improve our corners and set pieces, bearing in mind that we now have a specialist set piece coach who I'm sure will want to work with an adept striker of the ball - which McNeil is.

I was going to say he offers quailties that the rest of the squad don't possess, but that only leaves an opening for the wags amongst you to say that they are quailities we can do without!

I’m not going to say that - sounds pretty reasonable thinking to me - in a tight game Mitchell and McNeil on the left makes us more solid - totally get and agree with that..!!

As you say a squad game and you have to have a squad to counter different scenarios.

All good from point of view.. 👍
