Palace Summer 2026 transfers?

It is frustrating when you see the likes of Bournemouth, Brentford and Brighton going about their business efficiently and getting the players they think they need by 1st August. Only Sunderland and Fulham are on a par with us for the fewest players signed, with one each. This is how the club have operated for most of our time in the PL, for better or worse, so it is no surprise that we're here again. With Lacroix gone, we are now weaker than we were when we ended the season, with a much tougher European competition to navigate and a manager who is new to the league.

Once you go outside of what is our strongest XI there are a lot of ifs and buts, eg will Johnson rediscover the ability to score, can JSL turn effort into goals, can Franca win that Ballon d'Or? Reasons to be positive include Doucoure finally making his way back, the potential signing of Tomiyasu, who, if he stays fit, would be a fantastic signing, and some real potential in Drakes-Thomas and Cardines. I have a feeling we might end up signing someone like Disai on loan to see us through at least until Christmas, Le Guen for the future, plus maybe one more central midfielder if we sell Devenny. Then I think that might be it if we don't sell anyone else.

The number 11 being free does leave room for dreaming though...

Fair enough. Are you confident that they have what it takes to overtake those currently in front of them and earn the right to become our main men?

My honest assessment is,

JSL - genuine hard worker. Clearly has football intelligence and I think could become worth every penny of his transfer fee. His movement is very clever, when he clicks with the likes of Pino, Kamada and Sarr - he could be unstoppable. I do think he is an upgrade on Mateta but just hasn't fully settled into the team yet.

Johnson - Palace require the team to be greater than the sum of their parts. That's how we succeed and that is our blueprint. Players who play for bigger clubs that are used to having the ball more tend to have bursts of involvement within games. They spend the majority of the game trying to lose their marker, just to be given that one opportunity to create some space and make something happen. At a big club, that could be 5, 6, 7 opportunities per game. At Palace, it's more like 1 or 2. Therefore, Johnson needs to work harder to create his own opportunities on and off the ball. Does he have that in him? I'm not so sure personally but would love to be proven wrong.

Glasner saw what Mateta's strengths were and played to them leading to Glasner commenting that Mateta was the best finisher that he had worked with in football.

Roy has commented that Mateta was always a positive presence around the place and was always asking for first team opportunities, but Roy said others were ahead of him (e.g Ayew).

As fans we have to hope that Sage can unlock and unleash Larsen and Johnson as Glasner did with Mateta.
It may seem unlikely at present, but football does turn up surprises.

Roy played with inverted wingers, Zaha (later Eze) and Townsend who both naturally cut in to create their own chances. Almost meaning the striker was just a body to occupy defenders. Mateta, Ayew, Edouard, Benteke all unfortunately fell victim to that method of management and team set up. None of them had a good scoring record under Hodgson.

I must admit, I don't know anything about Sage. Excited to see what he has about him though. When players like Kamada are turning down Saudi money for our project, he is clearly doing something right.

I would also add that if we are going to keep Ozoh why are we not trying him out as a emergency centre Back which is where OG thought his best position would be. He could then become the new Lerma? A defensive midfielder / defender.

that was over 2.5 years ago and whilst only for half a game it clearly didn't work.

He's played as a CM no 6 for his whole career including c50 games for Derby in the championship.

He is either good enough to play in CM for Palace or he needs to move on.

Well, of course that's were he was in his early days. I'd be happy with that and that we keep Ozoh in the hope he'll prove to be a reliable squad player.

as long as it's a loan i'd be quite happy. Need a big rock in the centre if we are to play 3 CBs and he impressed at WHU last year.
 
I continue to hold on to the belief that the club will not really invest until risk of relegation appears and that it will be the winter transfer window where the club continues to focus its energy. I think the summer is about seeing what the team has and then using the first half of the season to identify the gaps and who are the possible solutions.

you do know we are in the Europa cup and will have 6 games this side of Christmas and 2 more in January.

If anyone within the club doesn't know that we have a decent 1st X1 when all are fit and playing well, but squad depth is a massive problem then we are in real trouble.

I honestly don't think winning is the objective, I think long term sustainability is the goal. I think ownership has a plan and they are going to stick to it as long as it continues to produce results.
