Raphael Le Guen

I suppose because we paid a similar price for LaCroix we expect for that sort of money someone who’s first team ready now, but then didn’t we pay similar for Canvot? and he was supposed to be for the ‘future’ as well.
My guess is the squads going to be thin again this season and we’ll see more of this lad than we thought, ala Canvot last season

Its all mad, but it also does make sense.

If the parties involved think that this lad might be a top EPL defender in a few years, they aint letting him go for £5m. You might think then that £10m would be fair, but from their perspective, if he plays a full season he might be worth £20m by next summer. But we need to buy now, by next summer, bigger clubs might be after him.

I'm sure the Canvot deal and impact would have been referenced.

If we can get Matsima and Le Guen for the Lacroix money, it still feels like strategically the right thing to do.

It is crazy, but what would you do if someone wanted to buy a young player who had just got into the 1st team? You certainly wouldn't want to sell.

We overpaid for Canvot last year based on c 20 games but as the end of the window approaches clubs get a little desperate.

Hopefully, the fee has a significant amount of add ons included. Surely we wouldn't pay more than 50% upfront.

It is a massive gamble though and although Canvot is improving he is still a work in progress and clearly still the junior member of that defence.

I would hope we stick the young lad with the U21s for a while to get him up to speed etc, something we didn't do with Canvot.
Of course the issue is if he is really that good he won’t want to come from playing in the Ligue 1 to playing in the U21s….hes not going to benefit from that in my opinion. If he’s not first team ready he would need to go on loan to a championship team or be loaned back to Brest until the new year.

i think it's far to say he is 100% not 1st team ready yet and he also isn't playing regularly in Ligue 1 - he's play 6 times in total.

Like Canvot i think Palace will view him as a work in progress and will take time to adapt - potentially he could feature in the odd cup game and maybe the 2nd half of the season.

Playing a few U21 to give him a taste of English football seems a very sensible approach IMHO.

Loaning him out would be madness. We clearly need players now and Sage needs to work with him.

Yep 100% not an U21 play here. If he hadnt have broken into the first team maybe, but how that he has he'll want to be first team.

We'll have enough games to give him game time here and there.

Been mentioned his price is €20 million, if that’s true it’s crazy money for a kid who has played just half a dozen professional games. It’s almost as if somebody has added an extra zero because it’s us, at that price it’s a no from me.
Have you seen him play? What scouting have you done on him?

From the highlights I've seen he looks promising, but the size of him he looks slow to turn.

He does look talented but anything over ten million would be too much considering the lack of evidence.

20 million is what you pay for a proven defender.

Yann diomande is going to real madrid for over £100m and he's only played 43 games (incl a handful for his previous club's b team).

the market is crazy these days and seeing as we're about to sell a right back for £5m that hasn't even played in the prem i don't think we can grumble too much at the fee we're being quoted for another team's young prospect.

Or for a kid with HUGE potential

Stupid comment - of course we haven't.

He's 19 and has played 6 games.

Compare say that with Devenny who broke into the Palace 1st team a couple of years ago and also the N.Ireland intnl team. At 20/21 years old he played c 20 games that season, the majority as a sub.

If someone had approached us last summer and wanted to buy him as he clearly has undoubted potential what transfer fee would you have put on him? Surely at least £10m. Maybe more with add ons.

On paper he looked a really good prospect.

Unfortunately last season showed his limitations and he's maybe a £5m player.

My point is after a few games it is very difficult to tell how a player will develop. Plange from Derby after c6 games for a cool £1m is another example.

Yep thats completely fair, and probably more than £10m IMO. As you said, young with prem experience.

But despite the experience, we knew even in his first game that Wharton had the potential to be special. I think we know that Canvot too, could be very very good.

As we did perviosuly with Olise and Eze.

Without picking him out, Richards will never be top top tier. Good and solid, but he isn't likely to ever get to the very top. Same a Mitchell (as good as he is).

I guess with 6 games this guy is in the limitless potential category.

One thing he certainly isn't is Lacroix's replacement.
True. Not immediately but looking at his Youtube, he looks very much of the same ilk: powerful, committed and no nonsense; when in doubt, clear the ball.

If he's only had five games, then that's remarkable, from what I've seen.

Why was it a stupid comment. I was making a point about dismissing based purely on one fact of number of games played

We spent more than that on Canvot after 18 pro games, and he's already increased in value significantly.

We've just sold a player who's never played a minute for us, with 16 Championship games to his name, for £5m.

Devenny, a 22-year old international with 40+ PL games, is certainly more than a £5m player.

It feels as though your values are a good few years out of date - prices have really exploded over the last 12-24m.

And one of the best penalty takers in the Club.
