He was also sanctioned for breaking a cufew for which he was guilty of. As captain it does not set a good example. So was he pissed off for putting himself in that situation or just for getting caught. As a player he is a legand up there with Botham and Flintoff, but today his ego and his sidekick Brooke have killed any chance of winning

Just not worth the high wages they are paid.

Bethell chose the IPL over red ball cricket before England tests and that bothers me.

Duckett did the opposite and actually seems to care......Brook seems to think he playing twenty twenty every innings.

Smith has one more chance with the bat but he shouldn't be the England wicketkeeper.

Tongue was talked up after the winter but has been poor against New Zealand on the two decent wickets after the first test lottery.

100% agree. The thought of Brooke being made captain fills me with dread. He does not have the brains,intelligence or patience for the role with his inflated self importance and oversized ego
 
NZ the better squad. They deserve some credit.

Who should be the next captain? Root has shown it's not him. Brook? Not yet that's for sure..
Is there a Brearley, not the greatest batsman but superb leader, somewhere in county cricket? I don't follow the county game much so I don't know.

I expect they'll fall back on Root, because no one else fits the bill.

True, but he doesn't fit the ECB mindset. I could see them putting Bethell as captain before him.

But he certainly does seem to have motivated Sussex as captain.

Going by the stats in this match Robinson would probably have been a better bet than Tongue.
 
Just for completeness - could Ollie Pope come back in? Maybe even as wicket keeper. He was Stokes' vice captain before his collapse in Australia. Don't think it'll happen but Brookes, for all his talent, tends to be a bit reckless.
Bethell could be in with a shout with a bit more experience.

He can hold a bat and has a cricketing brain, went to the same school as David Gower I think

In my opinion we have to go back to wicket keepers who are the best at that job.

Foakes should have been that guy.

I don't believe that the NZ squad is better. England have two of the top batsmen in the world and pretty sure the top all-rounder, along with a couple of bowlers amongst the top.
New Zealand have nowhere near the resources of England. Which is clearly a f***ing waste of resources currently.
Shame none of them give a toss about test cricket - that much is obvious.

We have several misfiring, Root is doing o.k. but i expect more, Brook, Bethell , Tongue, Smith and Atkinson have not enhanced their reputations one little bit.They have the honour of playing for their country and need to sweat blood.
