i reckon another essential part of Englishness is city living. The rest of Europe (including Ireland, Wales & Scotland) were much more rural for much longer.
The mentality of a city dweller is very different to that of somebody who is from a tiny village or an isolated house in the countryside. London being the epitome of this.
And again, high population-density is something you share with your Dutch cousins. Along with being good at football, having an empire, innovative financial services, and micro-climate. London weather being more like the Dutch than the cloudy Atlantic - the absence of hilly terrain also being a commonality.
