Who's Next?

A sobering post!
It does raise the question - is the Premier League really worth the grief it creates for clubs like ours? It feels as though it's all hype, smoke & mirrors and we're somehow supposed to be grateful for being allowed to sit at the kid's table and scouting players for the big boys isn't much of a future.
It might be defeatist or just sour grapes but if all we can realistically hope for is a top 8 -ish finish then would not being in the self styled Best League in the World really be that bad?
As the saying goes we're running as fast as we can to stay in the same place and it's hard to see that changing.

relegation is not fun. It's rubbish. But I had some very enjoyable times watching us play in the Championship. Now a lot of that would be down to being younger, free and single and the football often being the focal point of an all day bender. We will end up back in the Championship one day, and it won't be the end of the world.

You are right of course. I’d be happy if we just steadied the ship, achieve safety this year, do what we are able in Europe and then next season make sure we don’t do what has happened to Wolves or Wet Spam. It was so b hard to do what we did last season, just look at the FA Cup in the last 30 years until us, only Wigan and Portsmouth won it outside the top six clubs. And look what happened to them. Remaining in the PL as long as we have and continuing the run, given the size of the club, will be one of the outstanding achievements in my book.
Was about to write something similar.

I have a feeling our next manager should be someone who steadies the ship. right now we're in relegation form - not sure where the next point is coming from, and selling off our big names. I've no idea what Squad the next man is going to inherit, but right now it looks like we need to ensure that we're still in the PL next year and then take next year to recover, reset and restabilise so we can prepare for our next push.

The next couple of months is massive for us. Does OG have the ability/desire to get us playing again?
What I'd really like right now is for someone else to come in and Show OG that the 'youth' on the bench are an option and that he Was wrong to berate them so. Afterall, if I was Uche I'd be furious and would be hoping that the option to buy wasn't taken.

Do you have any names in mind who you think could do something along those lines?

I wanted there to be a Super League so that all the big clubs would please f*** off and play each other four times a year. Like the Scottish League but more boring.
Leave real football clubs to it. Let the greedy players want to go there. Maybe have a wage cap in our new Premier League. Maybe have a ticket price ceiling. I can but dream I guess. It would be f***ing great to get rid of Man City, Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea maybe Liverpool. Although I have some respect for Liverpool. As they always treat us well in general.
A few dodgy transfer deals undermines that. Steak prices for horse flesh due for the knackers yard. Razor Ruddock, Sakho and Bendonkey.

A lot of sensible and realistic posts on this thread, IMHO.

I would guess that the major ambition (Parish) is for us to be a team that is not relegated from the PL and playing in an upgraded stadium.

We won the FA Cup and are playing, albeit poorly, in Europe. That feels like the most success we could have possibly hoped for. I didn’t think it would ever come to pass.

The likelihood of us kicking on from there was not impossible but I do think it a bit naive to just expect it to pan out as such. The vultures came and further investment in playing staff did not, so the manager has thrown a wobbly.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we witness nothing but sticking plasters to avoid relegation from here on in, until such a point the stadium work is done.

I’m too familiar with it all by now to feel aggrieved by it. Even with the team seemingly falling apart under a manager who has no answers and doesn’t wish to be here, I’m somewhat thinking ‘meh, it’ll work out and we’ll just finish 12th again’.

We haven’t won a game or even looked competitive for a while though, and that’s where my annoyance lies as I just want to watch Palace in a competitive match!!

We're quickly going from European CUp winners elect to potentially only just about having enough players to field a team and maybe miraculously avoid relegation. C'est la vie and such is Palace.

Where's Bert Head when you need him?

Ah, down to earth... with a thump. Our transfer business is not looking too good either. We appear on the point of getting gazumped by Wrexham.

Stay patient. Key players returning; but this weekend is too soon for the long-awaited upturn.

I don't want this Cherki guy. It may as well be Uche. He could be special or he could be "special", who knows. That's for the future. He's not going to be leading the line in the Premier League right now. We need a Mateta replacement. My own ideas would be someone in late 20s but cheap and relatively proven. Or a mid 20s Championship or foreign league striker with a half decent record. Our style seems to require some physicality and hold up ability. Obviously some goals. Determination would be nice too. I'm getting quite sick of the snowflakes who need a move to cool clubs in our squad.

What I do not understand is the reality of our situation this year. European football came to Selhurst Park, we were the favourites to win the Conference and thereby keep European football going by virtue of winning the conference. That still applies today (for now). The idea that we could maintain european football (Europa league) by virtue of finishing 6th was/is highly unlikely. So FFS why can't we improve the squad properly in a planned fashion (let's not hide behind UEFA financial restrictions).

Now from the outside it looks like we are imploding, in crisis mode of our own making and throwing all the hard earned efforts of last season down the drain! Highly exasperating and difficult to fathom, especially as the club still defers to external communications through a hostile, unpredictable and unreliable coach; what are they thinking in Soho?

Parish getting the DoF to speak to Glasner may have been a way of avoiding confrontation, a statement that it’s the DoF’s job to “manage”!the coach, or possibly because he left Guehi’s transfer in the hands of the DoF assuming he would keep Glasner informed/involved. Either way it’s hard to be impressed by our DoF’s performance thus far. I’m clinging on to the hope that his temporary contract is because Dougie is coming back in the summer. If so then maybe working with Popovic as coach is the dream team to rebuild for next season.

A very rational basis for annoyance, I'd say.

I think there's a fine line between success and utter failure in football and sometimes a few injuries and players head's being turned can do that!

I was hoping the success last season would encourage some investment into the team, discourage departure and bring about a surge in ambition.

Sadly, that has not been the case and the price we've paid for having a manager who could win us silverware is that this particular sort of manager is not for the long term.

Tough times ahead. We look to be starting all over again as opposed to 'pushing on'.

Dougie is unlikely to come back until March 2027 when he has completed two years as sporting director in Saudi Arabia. This is because, being a canny Scot, he will want his remuneration to be tax free. However, he will have made a lot of contacts among the wealthy Sheiks at the Al-Diarrhea Club and may well come back to buy out Parish and the Yanks shares. We can then look forward to big banners at Brighton about us selling out to the Arabs.

Clubs of our standing can of course have a 'Standout' season but it cannot be maintained.
Burnley finished 7th under Sean Dyche, in the next 3 seasons they finished 15th, 10th 17th and the season after were relegated.
Leicester after winning the league finished 12th, 9th and 9th in the following seasons.
Steve Parish commented that he would like to finish in the top 10 in the League.
