War in Ukraine

Reuters: According to the EU plan, the Ukrainian Armed Forces should have a strength of 800,000 'in peacetime.'

At the same time, EU countries insist on 'the deployment of NATO fighter jets in Poland' and the provision of 'US military guarantees to Kiev at the level of NATO Article 5.'

Are the EU brain dead? A big reason why the war started in the first place was over the nato membership in Ukraine. That meant having their jets, men and missiles close to the Russian border. 🙄

They want the US involved and to keep the war going for as long as possible.

They are holding onto the hope that the US can retract favourable terms from Russia.....So from some we get all this rather pathetic guilt crap on Trump and from others just a complete denial of reality.

It's basically the only realistic play they have left.....that and the long shot that Russia fall apart or do something crazy like attack the US.

Europe's counterproposal to Trump's 28-point Russia-Ukraine peace plan, according to The Telegraph:

- Europe rejects Trump's point 6 – No restrictions on the size of the Ukrainian military.
- Europe rejects Trump's point 7 – Ukraine is free to join NATO, therefore is not forced to be neutral.
- Europe rejects Trump's point 8 – Ukraine is free to invite friendly forces.
- Europe rejects Trump's point 21 – An immediate ceasefire, no land exchanges will take place, with the freezing of the front-lines as they currently are.

So no end to the war then.

In other words, it's a counteroffer.

They will meet in the middle and everyone will go home disappointed.

Save those released from sanctions, oil and shipping companies, the arms trade and those with the re-build contracts...

I hope you're right, but I doubt it.

I get so annoyed when Starmer gets in front of a problem to self delude he or the UK have any impact on how and when the war will end. Same as Boris before him

My take is that the European political elite are desperate to do any and everything to stave off the end of this war because once the guns stop and the smoke settles then there is going to be a reckoning. Of any and everything.

So just for starters, Johnson's role in scuppering an earlier peace-deal, MI6 and its role in formulating much of the s***, Norstar 2, the despicable lies told in the so called 'Free' Western press and so on and on. And that is just the UK. France and Germany have their own versions as well.

There are multiple tons of s*** about to fall when this war stops. And we have a collective set of politicians in the West who know vast amounts of it will fall on them.

If this peace deal does go through, then it will be the biggest foreign policy humiliation for the UK since Suez. And will reverberate for decades. Russia has gone from strength to strength and once it emerges victorious, then will cast a shadow over the EU for a long long time to come. Not in terms of any kind of direct military threat but rather because of the sheer amount of political payback that will land in London. Paris and Berlin.

I wish you were right and I fully agree with your criticism but I can't see them paying a price myself.

Elites don't get held to account for failures (one of democracy's biggest flaws) and the media...practically all of it (as with Covid) passionately supported the Ukraine war and the decisions that took us deeply into it....costs and all.

Essentially the British middle and higher class are just low quality in general......it's one of the factors in our decline quickening up.

They will blame everything but themselves.....and the media....Well of course they were just as culpable, so they will support them in their fingerpointing......So expect to see all the usual deflections and excuses for this absolute incompetent mess.

Zelensky's top adviser resigns after Ukrainian anti-corruption raid on his home

Also noted this afternoon that News 24 ran this as a big 'breaking story'.

Strikes me that they are clearing the way for a new regime to be installed now in Ukraine. With Zelensky perhaps portrayed as a man betrayed by those around him, and therefore stepping down himself by way of doing the honourable thing.

But the idea that the anti-corruption squad would move against this particular individual without it being ordered by those actually running the show in Ukraine, ie MI6/CIA, is beyond belief.

Potential political end-game shenanigans playing out here.

100 percent.

The corruption was and is ongoing from the start.

This was always a rug pull that the US had available to them from the start.

The US are just as complicit in it.....and only gave a damn once they were done with Zelensky.

So apparently Yermak, the #2 to Zelensky accused of corruption, has announced that he's off to the front line and "Glory to Ukraine". I'm not joking.

Interesting if true.

The only source I can find on that is:

'A post from Ukrainian MP and Zelensky critic Oleksandr Dubinsky (a political prisoner until recently) claims Yermak was "brought" to a frontline area under the protection of a commander known as "Madjar" (a prominent figure in the "Drone Wall" initiative and 68th Jaeger Brigade). Dubinsky alleges this is a "hideout" arranged at Zelensky's personal request, where Yermak has no assigned role, tasks, or combat duties—just security detail to evade NABU summons (which can't be served in active war zones). Unit commanders reportedly refused to integrate him, per this unverified source.'

Agreed. The EU and UK have messed this situation up good and proper.

If the deal doesn't go through they are stuck funding (or worse, actually participating in) a forever war on the Russian front.

So for the EU/UK it's a lose/lose in either scenario.
