Rachel Reeves

But millions are no longer paying in and that is the problem. We need to move to an insurance based system which will mean us pensioners (amongst other groups) having to pony up which many on here will be upset about.

The reality is that fewer and fewer people are paying for the NHS so they (working taxpayers) end up sharing more and more of the burden.
Amen

But expect the irrational backlash I got for means tested state pension.

Btw, anyone hear Nick Robinson eviscerate Rach on the Today Programme?

The BBC does have a liberal left leaning, but I think The Today Programme holds itself up as impartial as you can be.

Funding the NHS has always been political dynamite, two M.P's resigned over Labour bringing in charges for teeth and glasses one was obviously Aneurin Bevan the other was a new entrant to Parliament an unknown young boy called Harold Wilson ( whatever happened to him).
They were cynical resignations designed to further their careers in the long run.

Well, at least I can still whack £20k a year in a cash ISA cos I'm over 65. But the whole thing was a fiasco targeting all those folk who set their alarms every morning to do an honest day's work for the benefit of those on welfare who would undoubtedly think it was well fair.

I thought that on introduction of the NHS that Aneurin Bevan said that the NHS scheme was to be free at the point of access and people's National Insurance would cover everything , i would like to get back to that point not further away.
I whole-heartedly agree with the sentiments, but there are a few issues surrounding this, including some of the following

1. the birth-rate falling and people living longer means we have a much higher percentage of pensioners, living longer (not contributing) and having much better/more expensive healthcare than 50 years ago.
2. Healthcare tourists: the influx of immigrants (legal and illegal) has placed an additional burden on the NHS.

Notwithstanding, other issues , such as poorly paid nursing staff which curtails new recruits, and top-heavy well paid management , etc, etc

I reject this viewpoint with every fibre of my being.

Last summer, the hapless Reeves promised not to raise taxes on working people. Within four months, she broke that promise and imposed a £25 billion Jobs Tax. She then promised in November 2024 that she would not raise any more taxes.
In the Budget she did just that, for a further £26 billion in taxes.
The 'Broken promises Chancellor'.

She raised EMPLOYERS NI. That isn't a working person tax, is it. And businesses, unlike working people, have had a long series of cuts to corporation tax over the past 15 years.

There is not 26bn tax on working people this time either, the thresholds are an increase but the Tories began that a decade ago.

Typical Toryboy, doesn't know jack s***

Employers NI just costs other people or keeps them out of work, fewer promotions, hiring, bonuses etc etc etc. It’s a stealth tax. Tbh I’d prefer a short term income tax rise…

Be honest, how much is Brexit or the blocks on Brexit the reason for our problems?

Be honest, how much is Brexit or the blocks on Brexit the reason for our problems? I know there’s the huge debt from Covid and then Ukraine effects.

Exactly. There was never any true independence. There was certainly no proper border. The EU needed to be put in its place - not paid off and helped out. They constantly attacked the UK but constantly want its waters, its expertise and its military. No benefit - no thanks.

When you mean "people who don't work" I guess you mean "children"

In case you've not noticed we have a debt problem, and you should understand bond markets and how interest rates on gilts fell yesterday in reaction to realise that, actually, this is about as good as it gets.
Will child benefit affect universal credit?

I was in favour of increasing the cap to 3 or 4 children, but not unlimited and not for people who have just arrived here. There is no subtlety and therefore no sense to the changes.

The bottom line is that Reeves just increased taxes for millions and just gave the unemployed a pay rise.
She also increased the costs of running a business, the sum of which will be passed onto consumers and therefore further increase inflation.

Cyclists should be tax to pay for treatment when some t*** runs them over? Lolol
How about when they cause damage to someone's car, or block up traffic because of their dedicated cycle lanes taking up road space, or ignore zebra crossings or red lights, go the wrong way up one way streets and injure someone crossing the road then zip off with no way of being identified?
There should be a test to ensure they at least understand what road signs mean.

Rachel Reeves promised last summer not to hike taxes. She broke her promise within 4 months, and her Jobs Tax has spiked unemployment and clobbered growth.
She then promised not to hike taxes again.
But over a year later Rachel Reeves has come back for even more with a further £26 Billion in taxes.

Last summer Labour came into office and spent billions. Wasteful green energy subsidies. Trade union payouts that didn’t stop strikes etc etc. They scrapped the Conservative plan to cut £12 billion off the welfare bill, allowing the cost of welfare to soar.
Keir Starmer was too weak to make tough decisions on public spending. It was patently clear that Labour would once again break their promises and come back for more.
Tax the working people to pay for the increase in welfare spending.
This was a 'Benefits' budget not a 'Growth' budget.
